Here's the timing cover. It looks like a piston too, I don't know at this point. I was planning on getting a rebuilt motor, which would be exchanging my block for a refurb w/new head. Now it just keeps adding up. Haven't even taken the head off.

But you have to remove the timing cover to do that. If you're not sure you're doing the finger-on-plug-hole method correctly (I don't find it very easy), you pretty much have to remove the timing cover to tell.
i assume you intended to write “valve” or “cylinder head” cover, instead of timing cover? because removing the timing cover isn’t easy, and removing it will not allow observation of the valves to determine tdc compression.
