22re started squealing, now no start
 

Hey my truck developed a squeal every once and awhile while driving then it would go away. It sounded like a belt I tightened them. Today I was on the highway and as soon as I hit 55mph the squeal was constant, then the motor just revved but did not go anywhere, I coasted to the shoulder, the truck was idle just fine and would rev but not move. I shut it off, now the truck will not start. The starter trys but does not ingage or anything. I manually cranked the motor over so that is not seized up.
What should I look for or what could my problems be?

Just kidding, you didn't say whether auto or manual transmission. If it's an auto, sounds like trouble right there in River City.

As for the starting problem, if I understand correctly, the starter will not turn the engine over, but it does click. Start by verifying that your battery and cables are in good condition. Check the big-assed ground wires, too. Then, check to see that the starter relay is working when you turn the key to start and that you get good voltage to the starter solenoid. Sounds like your solenoid is doing something, so you're relay is probably being activated. If the solenoid is getting good voltage, then it could be the contacts in the starter that the solenoid engages. But, check the online FSM starter section for a clear explanation of how it all works.

Its an auto, you can here the starter spinning but its not doing anything?

That doesn't sound good to me. The starter solenoid should cause the starter gear to engage the big ring gear on the drive plate at the same time that it completes the circuit to supply lots of current to the starter motor. The starter motor should only spin when the solenoid is engaged and the gears are engaged. For some reason, you've got the starter motor spinning without it engaging the big ring gear. I don't know of anything that would cause that that would not necessitate pulling the starter to look and see why it's not turning the drive plate.

With the first problem -- engine running but not driving the vehicle with transmission in gear. Doesn't it have to be either the transmission or the transfer case? In either event, it doesn't sound good to me.

As long as it does not snow tonight, I am going to pull the starter tom. to see what I can see. Is there anyway to to check the ring gear or torque converter without pulling the transmission.

you have to remove the trans. im not familiar with your truck but usually there is some kind of inspection cover in that area you can pull to verify thats it. if nothing else pull the starter and grab the flex plate it shouldnt move. if it does its broken

look like i wont work on it today, there is a few inches of snow on the ground and its still coming down.

Despite the snow, I took a look and the flywheel is shattered, so I guess later this week the trans will be removed.

Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the trans removal. Its not a bad idea to think about doing the rear main seal while you are in there.

Yeah its cheap enough I am probably gonna do that also, its my daily so I need to get it finished soon, so I can get my car back in the garage and out of the elements.

At what point in time did the fly wheel blow up? My brain is fried at the moment. I imagine it would have run terribly with a partially shattered fly wheel.

It ran fine, then made a squealing noise once or twice in the past few weeks but still drove fine, But top speed I hit was probably 40, then on the high way I hit 55 and it started a constant Squeal then stopped moving just revved.

ok I worked on it for a few hours today in the snow, Does anyone have any good tips on removing the upper trans bolts, they seem like they will be pretty hard to get to.

There was a thread that addressed this not long ago and Abe had a photo of a ratchet with a flex head and bent handle and my understanding is that with such a ratchet you can screw and unscrew those bolts from inside the engine compartment. Look at Amazon.com for "flex ratchet wrench" and you'll see a bunch of stuff.

Other people say you can get these bolts with a couple feet of extensions and a u-joint adapter. I envision this works from underneath, threaded past the transmission.
