Lol yeah hes wierd but a very likable guy,hes about 145 years old I think.Seen an interesting stat on manswers the other day : country music is proven to be most likely to drive a person to suicide.Above ALL other music. So Im guessing that if my first LP purchased would have been Merl Haggard instead of Van Halen,I would be dead now.

The absence of oil may have precipitated the failure of the timing chain as the tensionner is oil-dependent and without it, the chain would be slapping about. The 22RE is interference, so a broken chain would likely stop the engine as the pistons would be up tight against the valves. You could try turning the engine backwards to find out if thats the case.

I don't think you can buy something like that but I'm sure it can be made.

Maybe gets locks for the tranny and diff drains as well.

While you're at it why not put plywood on your windows so know one can break them.

Lol@Marc...might as well dig some holes in the yard, fill with concrete sink a steel chain in it and chain the other end to your front suspension.

So I started working on replacing the timing chain.

Got the crank shaft pulley off, along with all the other pulleys. Drained oil, radiator out. Had to work on it outside because there is too many VW's in our shop! Hopefully the weather wont be too bad tomorrow. I want to get this done by friday, maybe saturday!

Oh and I tried to get the valve cover off, doesn't look like there is any rtv on it but it is a bugger to get off! Any suggestions before I just got ahead and search?

Thanks!

Your valve cover fits on without rtv. It has a gasket built into the rim and is lightly torqued onto the head. or should be...

Yeah.. but someone could have easily thrown some RTV on it over all the years and miles this truck has been through. But yeah, doubt its RTV because it leaks like a ***** . I just care about getting it off without a crow-bar and damaging something.

my opinion, all you can do is be patient with it. get a razor blade maybe, and gasoline will help to disolve rtv, gasket maker. Yeah, it's a headache, but don't let it get the better of you. Plus, you got Yotatech. good luck, hope I helped.

Got everything done tonight. For some reason the timing chain cover won't come off? Rapped on it with a rubber mallet like 20 times. There is RTV seeping out of it and I guess my next plan is to take a putty knife around the whole thing.

22RE is technically an interference motor. However, most 85+ motors have dished pistons that will not hit the valves. I just tore an 88' down this morning and it has the dished pistons. I am rebuilding the lower end this week and should have a fresh motor with a 261* RV cam running for around $300 in parts. The motor had a fresh head on it with 3K miles on it.

A buddy will hone the block next weekend. Then I will swap the Cam, Main bearings, Rod Bearings, install new Thrust washers, and new piston rings.
