22RE, no injector pulse
 

89 pickup, 4x4, 22RE, 5 speed. Keeps losing the injector pulse. Thinking of buying the truck but need to find a fix to this problem first. Current owner is a mechanic (not Toyota), says the truck will run for a while, anywhere from days to months, then quits with no injector pulse. He has swapped out the ECM a bunch of times, and this fixes the problem for a while before it happens again. He ran out of ECMs and patience and I can get the truck cheap if I can figure out what is wrong. Anyone seen this problem before? I have one of the old ECMs if there is something I can check or test on it.
He doesn't do anything else to the truck but swap out the computer to get it running again.

maybe the wiring is shorting out somewhere by the engine and is burning the ecu out?

Also make sure that the injectors are the proper ones for that truck. There are 3 types of injectors for the 22re motors. Having the wrong ones for the 89 model can burn out your ecu.

Pretty sure the engine is stock so there shouldn't be an issue with the injectors being the wrong ones. My best guess right now is the injector wiring shorting out intermittently, seems to be a common problem at the crimp connector in the harness. Anyone know if it's possible to check something in the ECM to confirm that this happened?

sounds like mine did. verify continuity form all ingnitor wires to ecu. if you dont know which wires they are, its not hard to find that info.

i ended up splitting my harness from ignitor, under intake, back to the firewall where they go into the cab, and re-insulated. runs great. ecu is not the problem nor do i think it is getting burnt out

i see a lot of threads now with this problem, still dont know exactly what it is but some fresh insulation is worth the time no matter what on a 20+ year-old truck
