Looking good so far! I should have taken as many pictures as you did at the beginning I'm hoping I can remember how it all goes back together, i have parts in my shed, carport, truck, everywheres lol. Good luck be sure to ask if any questions arise

This is what I'll be doing this coming spring, replacing the T chain itself, along with all the other parts in there.

Yeah, so far my parts are in the bed. Guess I'll have to put the cap on it tonight. At least you can use these pics, we have the exact same truck!

Quick general question, I'm getting ready to pull the plugs, belts and distributor and set to TDC. At what stage do I pull the 19mm crank bolt? Before or after the distributor?

I believe you remove the crank bolt after the distributor. But not 100% certain, I didn't remove it at all for replacing only my headgasket. I set TDC to remove the distributor, then removed the manifolds and stuff. then had to adjust it back to TDC. removed top sprocket pulley bolt while my cousin held the crank bolt still.. wiggled off the distributor drive gear thing. then took out the 'hidden' bolt right under the distributor drive gear in the puddle of oil

my money is on the chain eroded the timing cover.not head gasket failure.

I guess we'll see, I really don't know. The tc cover looks alright to me at this point. The chain itself looks like it was replaced recently, the PO said the lady he bought it from had replaced it. (Would that be the PPO?) Can't tell yet if the guides are intact.

I pulled the plugs, fan, belts, and distributor. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow so we'll see what gets done.

guides are gone bro....they aren't there at all. see my thread to see a dressed up pic of where they are supposed to be that your's are not.

here's the deal. timing chain may have very well been replaced. but you guides both look like they are gone. you have to either pull your motor or otherwise get your pan off and get the broken pieces out of the pan. you are going to have no oil pressure with the guides and crap suffocating the oil tube.

Oh yeah I know that! I already have new guides and a chain on order. I plan on pulling the oil pan. I finished poking around and found pieces of guide all over the place.

I suspected plastic crap was stopping my oil pressure but now I know for sure... seemed like I only had oil pressure under load but not when I was idling.

Yeah, this all just makes me glad I'm replacing EVERYTHING. I was gonna wait on the TC cover but I figured it would be grooved through so I ordered one before I tore all this apart. Should be getting all my parts Wednesday and dropping off the head Monday.

Also glad I'm going w/ the steel back chain rails!

Okay, I have a dumb question. I need to remove the crank bolt but I already removed the distributor. The method of bumping the starter says to remove and ground the coil wire (obviously w/ the distributor still on).

If I bump the starter now I'm guessing I'll get a bunch of sparks but I can't rationalize why! So do I put the distributor back on and ground the coil?

I'm gonna give a cheater bar on the end of my breaker bar a chance first, just to see if I can break it free. I doubt I'll get it though.

Disregard previous post.

Just bumped the starter after thinking about it for more than 20 seconds! I convinced myself things would be fine. Threw my trusty old Plumb 1/2" breaker bar on there w/ a 19mm socket and bumped it. Came right off. Honestly that was probably the easiest part so far.

Yeah, it was easy! I'll be back at it tomorrow, I still need to drop my diff so I can drop the oil pan.

Can't lose focus though, I really need to send off the injectors and get the head in to the machine shop. I'm done for today though, time to have a few!

BTW, our trucks look identical, I even have that cap! It'll be on clist soon though, I'm not a cap man... What year is yours?

Mine is a 93 and I already sold the cap/topper over the summer, I'm too old to be crawling in and out of it ;}LOL

A good way to tell the difference between a 93 and made before 93 is there is no third brake light on the back of the roof, 94 and up they have the 3rd brake light on the back of the roof :}

Well, I took the day off work today to do some more tearin' up. I got the head off this morning which was my main goal for the day. It was hard to tell if the gasket failed, the removal was pretty hard on it. I'm pretty sure it had though, some of the metal rings in the gasket were broken.

The real kick in the teeth was when I got the head to the machine shop. They found two cracks in the head immediately. Oh well, new head and valves. They're getting me set up with the head, valve job, and new head bolts for $400. That all comes out to the same if I bought my head through engnbldr so I call it a draw. Too bad though; I would have preferred their quote of $170 to do my head and the valve job! Oh well, life is short.

did you remove some of the pics? I could have swore I remembered you having more of the engine bay before you started tear down xD
