Just put a complete professionally done rebuilt engine in my 1991 22re pickup. We put the engine in ourselves. We did our first start up last night. After about 1 minute of idling at a high idol we noticed an exhaust leak coming from the joint between the header and the exhaust pipe. We tightened that down and restarted it once again. After about 4-5 minutes of having to help it idol we noticed the exhaust header was GLOWING RED. We are thinking its a timing issue. We have not tried to time it yet except for the engine was suppose to be at tdc. While it did idol for that short time there was no pinging just sounded like it didn't want to run. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not sure how similar it works to the 22re, but that happened to my v6 and it was the distributor timing.

That is usually the timing is to far advanced. Recheck to make sure you didnt get it in on tooth off and check timing again. I have had it to happen by not having the distributor bolt completely tight.
