22re fuel filter relocation

4 Attachment(s)
So I went to replace my fuel filter today so that all the oil and filters are changed with the first 1,000 miles on the new motor sounds like a easy and normal thing to do right? NOT!

What a pain in the as$ it is to get to in the truck, it was a breeze when the motor was on the hoist getting ready to drop it in, so after fighting to get at it from the under side for about a half hour I decided to see if I could mount it some where else besides the block.

After looking around for a few minutes and taking the fuel lines lengths into consideration, here is what I came up with( works for me may not be for everyone ) using the passengers side fender wall, the A/C hard line mount worked to mount the filter down, only one mount though but it is still very solid.

Yea I know it's not a Toyota filter but they said it would take 2 days to get one (You would think as popular as the 22re is they would have one or two on hand and not have to order one ) it's a Auto Zone replacement filter.

Thanks for the fuel filter relocation ideas!

I ended up drilling a hole about 3 inches toward the tire from where olharleyman mounted his. I just bolted a small 135* bracket and it fit well with my fuel line lengths.

Just make sure you have enough flex room with the fuel hoses to account for the engine torquing. ;)

Thought about that, thanks! The filter-to-engine hose has alot of play. The filter-to-body not as much, but I figured that's okay in this case.

i did mine yesterday went right up under the front fender and changed it was hard with no space but worked left it there (stock location)

The 22re torques to the passenger side, so you should be ok anyway. :) Just watch reverse. ;)

That looks great I need to do this along with cutting a fuel pump hatch in the back. Half my repairs are done on road side so having to drop the tank or take apart the front end to change things is not ok and having giant hands makes it worse

This is exactly what I was thinking about doing. Anything that is battery, fuel, or brake related had better be 100% squared away and secure in my book. I wasn't sure about the line length so I reattached it in the factory location until I can cross more pressing issues off my list of WTH did the PO do that lol

fuel filter relocation

Here's what I did with mine, very similar to what olharleyman did except I used some preexisting holes just above the access panel and below the AC line. Mine is mounted vertically as opposed to horizontally which I feel might give a bit more clearance between the intake manifold. It also didn't put any tension on the lines. You have options!

Thanks a lot for the ideas, guys! I haven't looked at mine that close, yet, because it sounded intimidating work - LOL. So a question... are the fuel lines leading to the filter flexible so it would be easy to relocate? OR are the lines rigid and requires careful bending?
TIA

Rubber lines but unless you had your 4Runner since birth who can say!!

I have one cable tied to the AC hose.

Another one Mounted in a old coil bracket to the inner fender.

If I recall the inline attaches to the side toward the front of the engine.

it just made for a smoother attachment to the fuel rail.

Not intimidating work, especially if you have your intake manifolds out already. You should have enough play in the hose to do what those in this thread have done with zero mods to the fuel lines. Easy mod, just go for it!

SUWEET! Tnx for the info and encouragement, guys! Next time I have to work on/replace the FF, I'll relocate. Gotta install my fuel press gage piggybacked on CSI to take actual measurements first.

Doing this as soon as the rain lets up a bit. I really can't believe how hidden this thing is, what a pain. No wonder they never get changed. Picked up a WIX since I thought $40 for a filter was crazy and everyone who didn't go with the toyota version, seems to go with the WIX one. Either way, will throw up a picture to add to this thread once mine is done.

I saw it relocated in the engine compartment in a 1st gen 4runner, I need this done on my 3.4 conversion too.
