22RE fluctuating idle+ auxiliary air valve

When at idling, the revs cycle between 900 RPM and 1500 RPM every 3 seconds. I believe I've traced the problem to the "auxiliary air valve" (lets call it the AAV) which lets air past the throttle plate until coolant pressure is sufficient to overcome the force of the spring and block off the passage. This valve appears to be responsible for the high idle during warm up.

Firstly, I removed the AAV to clean it out as I was cleaning all the goo from the intake. I sprayed it with throttle body cleaner (Gunk Intake Medic I think) and drained all the coolant. I had to unplug the hose that goes from near the thermostat to the throttle body. Before the hose was removed, this had only been a problem once before- my hose is kinked here- maybe that contributes This hose loops upward and I wonder if in the process it got an air bubble in it and can't maintain the pressure to open the AAV.

Tomorrow, I will try to bleed the bubble out some how and report my results. In the meantime, has anyone else had a fluctuating idle as described? If so, what was the remedy? I'm curious if I'm on the right track. SHould have pictures as well tomorrow for reference.
