22RE - Findings and Vacuum Question

I was under the hood today trying to locate the rattle in the motor. While reving and trying to listen to the vavle cover with a piece of conduit. I heard a differnt sound. It seemed to be coming from the AFM as if a vacuum was closing a flap in there, but it seems to be an echo. I traced a vacuum line to the "Red" vacuum diaphram thing on the top of the valve cover. It seems like the daiphram is broken in it and sounds like there is "dirt" rattling around insdie it. My question, what is the "red" diaphram vacuum thing, and what is its purpose. A check in the chiltons doesnt really cover it under emissions, it is pictured but no label to it or indication what it is. And if somebody knows the answer to the red one, what are the other 2 of the same kind of diaphrams on the 22RE manifold? And is this part a dealer item or available at the local parts store.

Thanks

If you don't get any responses... try posting up a pic or two of the problem part.

Here is a pic of the part in question. This isnt my motor, but the part is the same. It is the red one.

That's a VSV, controlled by the ECM.

A salvage yard would be your best bet. I am sure a dealer or parts store will carry one, but for lots more money.

I am 95% sure you just need to grab one with the same vacuum/ plug configuration from most years Toyota.

HHHMMM. In the Chiltons under emissions section says the white one in front of it is the VSV. Given it could be wrong, not like that hasnt happened before with that brand manual. It is the same as the others i believe, jsut differnt colors. What is its purpose?

There are 3, if I recall correctly. They're all VSV (vac switch valves) - one is for AC (not ECM controller), one fuel pressure (ECM), and the 3rd I forget.

Their purposes are typically to give the engine more air under the right conditions. IE - you turn on your AC, you're adding more engine load and typically your idle will drop 150-200 RPM. The VSV adds idle speed so your RPM doesn't drop.

I've had one whistle.. never sound like dirt. Take it off, clean it out, blow it out.. Otherwise replace it.

If you have A/C, there should be 4 VSV's - fuel pressure, EGR, PAIR, and A/C. The VSV with the check valve, the one pointed to in you pic, controls the PAIR.

PAIR = "Pulsed Secondary Air Injection" - shouldn't it be PSAI instead of PAIR?
