I have a 1988 toyota pickup with the 22re engine , I love this truck but the engine is driving me nuts ! It worked very good when I got it , but just the other day it was raining and the truck was acting weird. For a while now it's been having an issue where it would bog down when trying to accelerate , it will still rev up but very slowly then it would kick up near 3000 rpm. Then while it was raining last weekend it died on me and I couldn't get it started , I diagnosed the problem of having water and the distrubuter cap so I took that apart cleaned it and waterproofed it. Next I went to a junk yard picked up a new coil and the truck ran great ! I was very happy. Today it's a very heavy rain , and on my way to the vets this morning it was doing that annoying bogging . So I figured something doesent like water and I don't know what it could be . Any ideas will be much appreciated

I'd start with new plugs/wires/cap/rotor, and go from there.

Getting any leakage by the ecu, down behind the passenger kick panel?

Yes alot the windsheild leaks on that side and when ever it rains the passenger side floor is big puddle of water

I would pull the kick panel, loosen the ecu and see if its getting wet. Definitely could be your issue and turn into a total cluster if you don't get it sealed.

The windshields do tend to leak from rust in the seal area. You will need to pull the windhsield and get it sealed back up. Windshield shops are familair with that problem. Sometimes corrosion can also get on the back of the fuse block and can cause issues as well on the drivers side kick panel. Another thing for the distributor that will help out alot is to replace the Dust Seal gasket. It isnt much at Toyota. Goes in between the Cap and Distributor.

Ya the ecu is directly where the water is coming in and it's wet. I silicones around that area many times. I don't understand tho , how come if it's wet it starts up drives and suck but does the bogging thing ?

I kept the old seals in the distr cap then used RTV sealant around it

Sounds like you found your problem. I'd get that windshield sealed A.S.A.P Before that mole hill turns into a mountain....

I'm not totally confident that is the problem. I dryed out the ecu yesterday and put a bag over it to see if there would be any difference. today It still does the same damn thing , it'll bog down then it'll kick to normal rpm revs around 3000 rpm . I did try sealing my windshield yesterday , but waters still getting in. So moisture and condensation would be getting on the ecu. Any more ideas ? Or is the ecu not being dry still my problem , lemme know what you think !

Its really hard to say, with not being there and all, but I'd still bet on a wet ecu, being as it only happens in the rain...

I noticed the that 2 corners of the ecu face plate were kinda rotted out making an easy access for water

Throw a silica packet or two in the bag with the ecu. If you take it out and dry it on the counter in a bag I would throw rice in there. But I wouldn't want to drive with rice rattling around inside a bag with my ecu. Just see rice dust making it worse. Hope this helps you dry out your ecu. Seal the bag with rice in it. The set it on top of your refrigerator let it sit for a day or two if possible. Good gentle heat up there but not to hot.

Ok I dried it out , made a new face plate and siliconed around the edges . Tryed it out and it's doing the same god damn thing. I hate electrical !

Well you still should go and have the windshield fixed right at a glass shop. I like to fix everything I can my self,but there are some things you just don't have the right experience,equipment,know-how, to do yourself. I have heard that moisture getting into the wiring harness going to the injectors on these trucks can cause problems.

Ok ill check that . Is it inside the engine bay? Or in the cab
