1st gen AFM on 2nd gen 22RE
When I bought my 1990 4Runner 22RE, it had a stupid K&N air filter and the AFM was unplugged and seemed to have been screwed with and was busted. I replaced the busted AFM with on off of a 1989 22RE. It seems to run well and all, but I still wonder if perhaps it would run better with a 1990 AFM. I now get about 18 mpg with 4.10s and 31"s mixed driving and I live in a very hilly area.
Second question, I passed smog with the AFM disconnected, how the hell is that possible, and after my rebuild, I couldn't even start it with the old AFM???
Puzzled.

i know on many engines, when the "afm" is unplugged, the "ecu" goes into a default state of operation, and perhaps everything else was compensating for the missing input.
all the afm does is measure temperaturs and amount of air (which in worst case scenario, would be running rich).-= maybe it was frozen in a good way. and now its unfrozen in a bad way
or maybe you have a big hole in your exhaust, and all the bad smog leaked out before it got to the tailpipe
i think there is no difference in a 89 or a 90 type afm, even the body style is the same (right?>)
the difference was from 87/88 into the 89s .

As a matter of fact, the idiot I bought it from had loosened off the manifold a bit "to give it more power and a wicked sound".
I guess that says a lot about the 22RE if it can pass smog with no AFM.
