1993 toyota pickup running weak?

Hey guys. i need your help on some stuff

My dad has a 1996 toyota tacoma. 5 speed, 2wd. During my permit phase of my license, this is what i mainly drove for 6 monts. i got used to the 5 speed, and decided this is what i wanted as my first car.

6 months later, i bought a 1993 toyota pickup. 5 speed, 4x4, ext cab. same size engine as my dads truck (2.4l 4 cylinder 22re) it has 288,000 miles on it. i know it is alot, but it barley has any rust, and is in great condidion. i got a very nice deal on it also... except for one thing...

Even from the second i took off on this truck,l i knew it was weak. welll, alot weaker than my dads truck at least. i guess my question is does 4 wheel drive, bigger than stock tires (31s on it) make that much of a difference?? when going up a hill on my way to school, which is about .5 miles long, i nearly have to hold it to the floor in 4th gear to keep up speed.

I recently drove my dads truck, and was amazed at its takeoff speed compared to mine. we have raced eachother before, and he kills me haha.
one of my dads friends used to own this truck before the guy i bought it from, and he says he believes that the compression is going out on it. my dad simply thinks its the tires. i believe stock are 22 inch and i have 31s on it.

Finally for my questions... Do i need to do a compression test? how much is it to buy one? How exactly do i do it, and what should the psi be? i read somewhere between 135 and 170, with no gap over 14 between each cyl.i would rather not take it to a shop just for a test unless i had to. if the compression is low, how would i fix it and how much money would it be?

Thanks for reading.

my 94 4runner sr5 3.0 5spd on 31s is a dog to. Try running it in a lower gear keeping rpms above 3000 it will pull way better. btw 4:56 gears in mine

somthing else i forgot to mention. when i hit about 3300 rpm, truck makes a weird noise. sounds like a belt squeeking really loud, but i have never kept it revved up long enough to really tell what it is

water pumps can squeel too. do you know when the timing belt and water pump was done last? should be done every 60 miles or 100000 k ish . But you need to keep the revs a little higher at least on my 3.0 I do.

2.4 22r-e's aren't known for their accelleration, or high-end power. they last forever and have a bunch of rock-crawling torque. 2.7's (like in the tacoma) have a bit more umph.

the squeeling is probably a loose belt. check all your belt tensions

if the engine has never been worked on, specifically had the timing chain and guides replaced, then it might be beneficial to take the valve cover off and check the chain tension.
