1992 Truck 22re Blown Head Gasket
I have a 1992 Pickup with a 22re. Got the truck cheap 12 years ago and has been a great truck. I blew a head gasket and the motor got hot. I got a quote, from a reputable mechanic, of 2400 to replace the head, timing chain and guides, water pump, and pretty much anything else he finds in the top end of the motor. He gave me a quote of 3900 for an ATK motor. The current motor has 250,000 miles on it. It has had regular oil changes. I'm not a mechanic and not sure whether I should go ahead with a full motor swap or just the top end. I'm leaning toward a full motor swap just not sure if it is worth it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need to find another mechanic. $3900 is way too much for that engine and installation. Friend of mine had one installed last Summer, and his total bill was $2500 for the engine installed out the door.
Engine costs about $1750 plus a $410 core charge. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...031%7CL3*16033 |
Given 16-20 hours of billable shop time, that R&R is actually a bargain in lots of places. Lots of places don't like to do them it ties up alot of shop space they could be cranking out high dollar to time ratio jobs in.

I had found the engine cheaper else where. Kinda thought it might have been a little high, but not that much higher. Thanks
