1992 pickup idle air control valve questions.
Have a 1992 pickup 2wd with 22RE engine. The idle air control valve is mounted on the bottom of the throttle body, and it has two coolant ports/in and out.
Pretty sure the valve is partially sticking. Cold start crank works fine, and the idle comes down some after engine warms up. I have the idle screw set right now, so it does not idle high enough for the fuel cut to engage. I have to keep the idle screw set on the high side because randomly every now and then the idle goes to normal. I can buy a new Standard Motor Products AC141 idle air control valve for about $85. As far as I can tell, this part is made in Japan? Does anybody know if it comes with a new gasket? If it does not, I am going to have to buy a Toyota gasket. I already have a throttle body gasket in my parts bin. About getting the idle air control valve mounting screws out. Hopefully, I can get them out without stripping, or one of them breaking off. Any tips for getting them out? |
This tool
This tool is designed to keep a stuborn screw from stripping.
https://goo.gl/images/wdfHaK How ever if it's completely siezed the head is going to come off and you better have your extractor set on hand. |
Don't have an impact screw driver set. That will be on my list too!
If a screw breaks off, it's going to my local automotive machine shop. |

If a screw breaks off, it's going to my local automotive machine shop. My local "machine shop" only works on trains :D Best of luck sir! |
Got the Standard Motor Products AC141 idle air control valve in today that I ordered from Rock Auto.
This SMP part is from their Intermotor import parts. Yes it's made in Japan. And yes it came with a gasket. I can take pictures, but Yota1 Performance Engine and Machine has the same part I have with pictures. Yota1 claims that it is an Aisan OEM Factory Toyota part. Mine has the 1-B stamped on the business side too just like their pictures. https://209yota1.com/products/aisan-...ota-22re-89-95 |
Got her done!
Those four idle air control valve screws would not budge after being on there for 26 plus years. I soaked the screws in penetrating fluid too. Had a very long phillips #2 screwdriver with a fat handle, and I could not move them one bit. Thought about getting the impact that was mentioned earlier, but I did not see a good way to hold the throttle body, and strike the handle on that type of impact screwdriver. Went down to Harbor Freight, and bought a 1/2 drive socket set that had Phillips 2 thru 4, and it had a few slotted sockets as well. Used the #2 phillips on my 1/2 drive cordless impact, and those screws came right out no problem. I cleaned the screws, oiled them, and re-used them again. 6 Pc 1/2 in. Nice job! Please don't forget to update once you get it all back on, so we're not left wondering if you got the root issue solved |
I will!
It's already back together. Going to take a few hot and cold cycles before I get the coolant level where I want it. Have to check for cold leaks tomorrow morning. I did a flush and fill with new coolant while I was at it along with a Toyota thermostat. At this point in time, I did have to turn down the idle via the idle screw, so something has definitely changed with the installation of the new valve. I will drive it for a few days, and then post my results. They are positive for now. |
Yes it's fixed finally! :great:
