1992 4Runner won't shift out of park after replacing Transmission pan gasket
 

I followed a youtube tutorial to replace the transmission pan seal on my automatic 6 cyl 4runner because it was leaking quite severely.

After properly draining, removing and fitting the pan back onto the car I filled the A/T fluid back up to 4.7 Quarts (a trusted mechanic told me this, not sure if its correct),
one thing I did do wrong was not place the magnets back where there were, I forgot about them and wound up shoving them in the side of the pan while bolting it back on.
The car started back up fine, but I can not shift out of park.


The shift lock override doesn't even work.
After Googling the issue: I have checked all the fuses, The brake lights work and the underside of the shifter (rod that attaches to transmission) moves according to the shift handle's position when disconnected from the transmission itself. In other word's this lock is being caused by something in the transmission itself not in the shift mechanism...

[There is a little red light on the dash itself to the left of the wheel above the brightness nob that (I thought) was the Alarm. It doesn't go off when I start the car and I though it did this may be irrelevant though.]

There are no warning light's however and everything seems to be working.

Guess what. You get to start over.

I'm guessing you got one of the magnets to jam the shifter; there's only one way to know, and you've got to do that anyway.

Like Scope103 said, go back and check your work.

Before tearing things back apart, check the transmission fluid level to make sure it is full. You never mentioned if the 4.7 quarts you put in brought the fluid level back to the proper level.

Check for proper fluid level after you put things back together too.

It is at the correct level of fluid. I'll let this thread sit for a little while then I suppose I'll have to pull the pan back apart.
