Question 1991 4runner v6 standard transmission wont go into gear

While driving to school my 1991 4runner all of sudden didnt want to go into gear from nuetral. I coasted into the parking lot and hasnt gone into to gear since. When off it go's through the gears fine but when running its as if im not even pushing in the clutch.. Clutch fluid is full and not leaking. The AAA guy who towed me home said the tranny probably went out.......Any help is much appreciated Iv been to this sight before but was never a member, you guys seem too know what your talking about. Thanks in advance for any advice

jack up the rear tires and see if they will move under the power of the truck, then if not i would start looking at the clutch disk or clutch it self. i have broke the clutch plate where the disk and center meet.

Thanks for the advice. I did that and topped off the clutch fluid and it started going again for about a 2 blocks. Now it goes into gear without even pushing the clutch down but wont pull itself..?? Does that give any more hints at what it could be?

is it a 4wd? have u tryed putting it into 4wd and see if it will move? to see if its a trans problem or clutch issue to me i would look at the clutch sounds like it has gone bad, but also might want to check the pedal for a crack and see if it might not be moving correct.

It is a 4wd but doesnt do anything when I put into 4wd. Does that mean its definately a clutch problem? Could the slave cylinder be causing this problem? How do I check the pedal to see if its cracked? The pedal doesnt seem to have as much spring back as it did when it worked correctly does that mean anything? Sorry for all the questions you seem to know quit a bit about 4runners.

Best thing to do is have someone else push the clutch pedal in and out, while you go under the truck and look and listen. Find the slave cylinder and watch to see if it moves. Should move at least an inch at full pedel depress. Sounds for sure like the clutch isn't disengaging. Explains why it goes into gear just fine when its off. Could be the clutch hydraulic system, a ceased throwout bearing, or broken clutch. Personally id just pull the trany knowing its clutch related. While your their you might aswell just replace the whole clutch with a marlin setup. You'll love it.

And if for some reseon I'm wrong, wich I'm not, and it is the trany, then you have to pull it anyways right.

yeah i agree, just pull trans and u will find the problem for sure, it could be a bad trans and the only way to know for sure is pull the trans and put it in gear and try turning the input shaft and if u get the rear spinning then the trans is good,

I had the same problem on my 90 4x4.
The only way I could drive it was to start it in gear with the clutch bypass switch and speed shift by syncing the RPM & road speed (Was enough to get me home)

Turned out that the pressure plate had broken into three pieces!!!

PS: another thing it could be is a broken clutch pedal bracket. It's pretty common and easy to check, so check that before tearing apart your rig

Thanks for all the help guys!! I bought a new stage 3 clutch off ebay and swapped out the old one. Turns out the pucks were completly gone..Turned out to be about a 9 hour job learned alot. Thanks again for the help. Now the tailpipe rotted and the whole tail pipe fell off after the muffler...Iv heard guys talk about installing cat backs while doing a cold air at the same time and really boosting power? What is your opion on both of these?
