1991 4runner, 10w30 or 10w40 synth motor oil.

The rig is a 1991 4runner, 3.slow, 294,000KMS, Automatic.
With the price of oil going up I'm going to be switching brands. I currently use a 10w30 Castrol synth blend.
I can get the Amsoil in a full synth for the same price now. They recomend a 10w40 oil.
Is this the way to go with the miles I have on it or should I stick with a 10w30 different brand or ???
If the price is the same for each, going full synth is a plus in my book what's you're thoughts?

i really don't know where the oil brand supersition came from, but switching brands or weights is NOT gonna kill your engine. i've had good luck with 15w40, 10w40 and 10w30 in my toyota engines.

do you have any oil leaks right now? if you do, going to a full synthetic may make them worse as the detergent properties are a bit better than regular oil, as sometimes a little gunk will be keeping things from leaking out.

I found with one higher mileage vehicle switching to 10W40 helped a bit with the oil burning, but in my 4Runner it didn't make any difference. One thing that did help in the 4Runner was switching to synthetic, my consumption went down. The 10W40 will give a bit more protection at higher temps, so if you live in a warm place that would be the one to use.

Oil consumption. With dino oil I would burn about 1 litre every 1500 km, and after switching to synthetic that changed to about 1 every 4000 km.

If there was any change in gas mileage it wasn't enough to notice.
