Exclamation 1990 Pickup CEL 51 After IAT and ECT mod? WONT RUN!

I am so lost it's almost funny... I added a 500ohm potentiometer to the engine coolant temp sensor, and when I turned the potentiometer up (increased resistance), the engine would sputter, but when I turned it back down (decreased resistance), it was fine. So when I turned the potentiometer up a second time to see what would happen, it sputtered like the last time, and then just turned off like someone turned off the key. It cranks but won't start. It's getting fuel, spark, and the compression is good. My guess is the ECU is toast, and it is throwing a code 51 (switch signal, TPS, or ECU). Has anyone run into this before? I can't find any forums or webpages with any info whatsoever regarding this issue. I don't want to buy an ECU if I don't have to...so any help/suggestions/ideas would be much, and I mean MUCH, appreciated.

Ok, well 63 views and no replies, I guess we got some experts on here huh. Well I finally determined it was the ECU and now she's running like new again...so to anyone who wants to add resistance to the engine coolant temp signal to try and advance the timing by 2 degrees and dump 4% more fuel than the base fuel map, BE CAREFUL! ECUs don't like to be messed with, but if you do it right, there are power gains to be had.

Check out GoECM.com if you ever do fry your beast's brain...$200 for a repair with 2-day turnaround time and best of all, it comes back with a LIFETIME WARRANTY.

Nope......no experts around here. Plenty of schmucks, though. Welcome to the club. YT needed one more!

maybe the fact you answered your own question when you said code 51- switch signal, TPS or ECU, no one felt the need to answer. after all you said you adjusted it twice then died and wouldn't start.

besides, if I needed 2 deg more timing and a bit more fuel, I'd advance the distributor and adjust the air-fuel meter first before I risked a home made device that could blow up my ECU.

LOL you guys have quite a sense of humor...the mod has been used since the 1980s, more commonly referred to as an IAT sensor mod. The Toyota ECUs are too smart to just increase resistance on the IAT signal, so you must increase the resistance on the engine coolant temp sensor to actually trick the ECU into thinking the engine is cold, thus causing the computer to use the fuel map that compensates for the cold engine (hence the advance in timing and more fuel delivery). It is an effective way to gain a few hp but the risk involved ultimately outweighs the gain. If it were just a homemade device that fried ECUs, I wonder why people have done this mod since the mid to late '80s? Hmm...again I question the knowledge of this community of "gurus." Impressive guys...

so I guess I've just been schooled by U in the proper way to mod a 22re

and just imagine... for the cost of that potentiometer and ECU... you could've bought a cam and got more power than your 'mod' could ever hope of making.

One last thing before I leave you to your righteous self.....

Alot of people already know about that mod. Just not everyone thinks it's worth the time or effort. It's antiquated and rather pointless in light of more fruitful and reliable methods of achieving the same thing.

Laughin my @$$ off...you obviously don't know how to read or you would have noticed where I said "the risk outweighs the gain," but it's ok...I understand it's hard to graduate college, and especially get a bachelor's degree in physics have a life that's actually worth something. I DEFINITELY wouldn't know since all I do in my free time is pretend to be a Yota expert instead of actually helping people out with useful information. Oh by the way...if you ever want to know how to fry an ECU let me know...I'm sure I can point you in the right direction...that is apparently my area of expertise! I sure am glad you guys have never made a mistake before...must be nice being perfect. Honestly, I think I'm better off learning my own lessons than relying on a couple douchebags for a simple answer...again, as I said in the FIRST post...I didn't wan't to buy a new ECU if it wasn't necessary, so I was hoping one of you oh so highly edjumucated "experts" knew whether or not there was a more simple solution to such an issue based on some previous experience, which now I know you know your experience is pretty limited...at least by a real expert's standards. It sure is nice knowing I can learn by mistake (since honestly $200 is pocket change) rather than ask for some simple help and get nothing but sarcasm in return. Way to go YT!!! Three thumbs up! Keep on swallowin the man-jiz ladies, I'm sure you'll find a better pimp than YT someday...LOL...oh and I still congratulate you guys on you're classic sense of humor...honestly it's all fun and games children...take it easy...or maybe try takin it in the @$$ a little less...you might "end" up a little less grumpy...PEACE!

oh...one last thing...I'm not an ashamed owner of a 4-banger...no less than 6 for me. And if any of you guys wanna race you're 22REs (don't care if they have 4k usd in the motor) against my "3.slow"...all I have to say is bring it. Oh and by the way I'll be racing with an eight inch lift (full susp.) and 35s with stock 4.30 gears and I guarantee I'll cream the 22RE any day any time...just won't run for 500k like the notorious 22RE lol. The trick to countering the reputation of the 3.slow is knowing it's secrets...there is more than enough power to be had!
