1989 W56C Trans 4WD Truck
Hey guys, great to be on this site for the first time. I've looked but can't find a way to explain my issue in a search so I haven't found the answer. Just picked up an 89 4X, 5 speed and the tranny will not shift. I can get it into what seems first and second (while car is off) but it is very very hard and then it gets stuck. Once stuck, I have to pull hard to get it out into neutral but it does not feel right. I pulled the tranny out today and would like some ideas.
thanks in advance. |
In my limited experience (not a trans builder) if it doesn't run thru the gears with the engine off and wheels not moving you are going to find debris and a trashed syncro or two.

Thanks for your reply. You are right. There are shavings in the tranny fluid. I’m getting it fully rebuilt since I have no history on it. I see Marlincrusher, and Yota rebuilt trannys. Any specific recommendations? |
Its hard to go wrong with anything Marlin Crawler puts out for Toyota's.

Awesome. Thank you |
Are you handy, or at least not easily intimidated? You could tackle it yourself, as it's not particularly complicated. Hopefully it's just bearings and seals. To start replacing gear sets can get expensive.

Yeah. I rebuilt motors and other things but I’ve never done a tranny. |
when I took off the drain plug, a synchro strut (dog) fell out. It looks to be a synchro issue. I might split it to see what else is going on in there, Not sure if I can get away with just new synchros.
