1989 Toyota Pickup 4x4 - 22re/5pd (No Start)

I'm new here, but i've browsed the forums off of Google search's and some helped, but i need more in depth because my pickup aint the same as other peoples. So i apologize in advance if i put it in the wrong area.

I bought this truck for $1,500, it bluebooks at way more (at the time, it may still), plus its my favorite pickup because its 4x4 and sports a 22r(e) series motor. plus its a stick shift, its body is mint (for being a Michigan truck) and motor has 86,000 and tranny has 186,000 / new clutch

Well anyway, after i test drove it, 2 local garages inspected it, we all thought it was a good running truck, smooth idle, strong motor, powerful (for a 4banger pickup) i got it home, then it started acting up.

Here are the symptoms and its story...

* Stalled, no spark (hard wired the coil to the battery with a toggle switch and fuse block, fixed the problem at the time)

* Stalled, no spark, burnt up my wire (was too thin) so i replaced it with a huge amp wire i had in the truck (i was out in a trail) and about 2 blocks from my house that wire burned up a bunch of wires and the fuse block (in the engine bay) I rewired all of those.

*Loss of fuel - the fuel pump stopped pumping fuel, the fuel pump works because i then hard wired that.

*Currently, sometimes it will start and sometimes it wont. I've got spark, fuel, air, compression. all at specs.... I believe the fuel doesn't get past the rail and into the block, i can hear the gas get into the rail and flow through that fine and back to the tank. but for starting it just is not reliable.

I really need help getting this figured out, local shops cannot figure it out. and i'm completely out of ideas. I've put a lot of money into this truck on odd-and-end parts for the motor. and i cannot spare much more. please help me get my Yota going. Thank you all.

sounds like what mine was doing. i also have an 89 22re 5spd. i took it to 2 different shops and none of them could figure it out so i went to a junkyard and started trying on different parts til it worked. turned out it was the MAF or AFM on top of the air cleaner box. you might want to look up how to test that and check the resistance with a multimeter. thats a common problem on the trucks. welcome to YT!! hope that helps.

In your picture, your toyota looks exactly like mine

i did massive rewiring on it. i managed to get it to start more often, but now it wont shut off with the key.. haha (i messed up big time) but the coil is now hardwired into the battery, the coil went dead without it. (sometimes actually).

I checked out your suggestion, and yeah my MAF Sensor is faulty. but its still got some other issues needing worked out. and Thank you for the welcome.

You guys on the forum are great, just from random browsing and asking a question i get a response within an hour, with a helpful suggestion! Thank you!
