1989 toyota pickup

i have a 1989 toyota pickup with locking hubs.. anyways when i put in 4wheel drive and start to go and shift whenever my trucks makes a very loud clunking noise like its about to fall apart! im not quite sure what it is if its my driveshaft when i put it in 4wheel drive or what? Thanks

There are many way more experienced people than I am but you may be referring to the clunking noise that comes from the 4WD "components". I'm assuming you are talking about when you turn? My 89 4Runner does it and so does every 4WD I've ever owned. Everything from Ford 3/4 Diesel to Mazda Navajo to this 4Runner. I think it's something about the gears binding or some such nonsense. Just wait and we'll both be educated very soon... :)

lol :)! i know when i turn a noise comes about and i was told not to worry bout that! this is just driving.. when i put it in neutral or try to get up to speed its a very loud noise like my truck is losing the whole bottom part haha.. but it only does it when i put it in 4 wheel drive and put it in 4high.. and once i shift to 2nd and more it just sounds horrible lol. like that little driveshaft or something is coming off or what not..

Well that is all the mechanical knowledge I can offer. lol I thought I was doing good there for a minute.

it's got to be one of the CVs, or the front drive shaft

Universal joint??

get under your truck! and dont come out till you found what looks to be the problem. shake your driveline around look for play in your u-joints.look for worn cv axle shafts.
if that doesn't work call a friend and have him look/listen wile you drive and narrow it down to where it is comeing from. then jack it up and figure wich cv joint is blown out.

so quit reading this and go fix your truck:nopity:

ok lets narrow this down so more check CVs like loose bolts that hold it on look for the boots to make sure they are not blown, next put your truck in 4wd and grab the front driveshaft and give it a turn if it doesnt turn then your ujoints are good next you need to go over all the mounts on the xcase, tranny, motor. next check the xcase fluid prolly change it and your front diff fluid too
