The high beams on my toyota don't work unless I pull the lever back.

like at the grocery store, where they try to make the shelves look full? or did you mean the stalk which controls the headlights?

the switch contacts need cleaning. mine does this. it'll be the second time needing to do it. have to pull the steering wheel to do it, so haven't, yet.

Yes. THIS ^^^
Contacts die or get defective prematurely because of the poor design of the headlight wiring that causes lots of power loss on wiring and subjects dimmer-combo-switch to high current.
Fix the contacts, then to fix the above problem and help extend life of your stalk switch contacts, use H4 conversion harness. NOTE: Commonly-available H4 conversion harness converts wiring to switched-positive and will not work with Truck-Lites LED headlights.

Just to echo RAD4Runner: Clean the contacts and order a conversion harness. I got mine from Headlight Services: http://headlightservices.com/4runner3.html. It was less than $100, plug-and-play, totally easy, everything feels quality, and my brights indicator continued to work. I had considered making my own and I purchased a cheap harness from eBay (which did not illuminate my bright indicator). I highly recommend ordering a quality harness. There are others, in addition to Headlight Services, that make these harnesses.
