1987 turbo 4runner
 

I recently purchased a 87 runner with the 22ret. I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a good site to get parts from. I have looked at lc engineering but I cant afford that right now. The truck has 143k and zero rust or body damage. It also has every option including inclinometer & auto tranny. I know the turbo is dead. but the engine seems to run good otherwise. I have about $2000.00 to spend and want it to go to the right places. Also I have a ct26 turbo from another project will this be a direct replacement or would I have to open the engine up for surgery?

It really depends what parts you want to get. I'm going to Engnbldr for the majority of my 86 Turbo build (including heads). I picked up a used Garrett turbo from eBay for $150. And I'm dealing with dcg9381 and diyautotune for all the computer/whizzy ÅÅÅÅ.

LC sells good stuff, but you'd think it's gold plated based on the cost.
There's a company called TEC that builds a bolt-in aftermarket turbo kit. Some people have had good results with it.

You can also use a CT-26 turbo from an MK3 supra. It's a bigger turbo, but has similiar feed and drains. It requires slotting of some mouting holes to get it to bolt up. It's cheap and very available (ebay).

You can rebuild the CT-20 in some cases - or buy one rebuilt off ebay.
They're expensive and typically aren't considered a great all around turbo.

X2 on the TEC kit

I've got nothing against the TEC kit, but I'd like to see a dyno comparison on it vs simply dropping on a CT26.

I don't really have a baseline regarding the truck as the TEC kit was already installed on the truck when I purchased it. However I do know that the truck feels significantly more powerfull than a 3.0 V6 89 xtracab even though I have 4:10 gears and 31" tires. I do know garrett turbos are very reliable and have many options to be sized to engine and/or mods you have. As far as I know the TEC kit is a drop in solution.

Do a search for Hodakaguy on this forum, he was the previous owner of this truck and did some extensive posts on the installation.

Unrelated: Jason at TEC did give me some top notch help when I was trying to sort out a high EGT problem even though I did not purchase the kit from them.

I'm putting together an intercooler for this truck using an air to water set up and a exchanger mounted in the front bumper. When I'm done this spring I'm hoping to have some numbers to post. Not the comparison you were hoping for but interesting anyway.

Any numbers would be great and I'd certainly love to see a water to air IC.
As I said, I don't have any issues with TEC and I'm glad someone is offering a kit.. I'd just love to see how it compares to the CT26 swap.

is there a site i can get info on where to obtain a turbo out of a mk3 supra? also what year is the 3rd gen supra? how many degrees do i have to retard the timing? is there any photos and a how to article on how to do the conversion? where would i place a blow off valve and a wastegate? i have a Garrett A/R 42 turbo sitting at home that i lifted from my old high schools shop, but mind you they just tossed it in the to go away pile, so its not really lifting it. i rebuilt it and installed new bearings and a shaft journal if anyone is interested, pm me. thanks for the help,

Holy old thread.. Lots of questions here, you may want to start a new thread..

IIRC 87-92 7MGTE Supra's have the CT26.

There is no set amount of timing you can retard to run any specific turbo..

Placement of the blow off valve only matter for plumbing reasons.

The wastegate is also a plumbing issue, however if you run an internal wastegate then it will be attached to the turbo's exhaust housing and route itself back into the outlet so it all goes right into the downpipe.
