1986 Toyota Pickup Brake Help
 

Hey all, I am new to the site and have a question about the brakes on my truck. When you press the pedal it has a slight catch. I changed the brake booster and it got better and now happens intermittently but hasn't gone away. It feels as if something is being blocked or not sliding correctly. The brakes work fine but do feel a slight bit touchy. I measured the brake booster push rod off the factory booster and adjusted the new one to the same spec and adjusted the pedal link to have about 1/4" of travel. Could it be the master cylinder piston not sliding properly? I'm at a loss. There is no leaking and the brake fluid level is fine.

does the pedal motion have that catch to it when the mc pushrod is disconnected? it's probably rotating on some nylon bushings? the clutch pedal has those bushings, it works better when they are replaced.

I just checked and it does not catch when disconnected from the MC push rod. Also it seems to only do it when cranked and after driving a bit. If I just crank it and try it before driving much it doesn't happen. Could not having the MC push rod adjusted exactly cause this? In the past it also made a noise in the right rear drum when it did it maybe something in there is worn?

if nothing else, it sounds like you might have to pull that right rear drum to troubleshoot the noise... if it's stuck, there should be threaded bolt holes in the drum, i oil up a long bolt and move it from hole to hole to get the drum off... of course that turns into a brake job, including turning the drum which isn't easy these days with the machine shops closing up.
