noob question here. whats the purpose of this part? Mine has been leaking slow and steady for the past 5 years, daily drive, steering still working excellent. What would happen if it was disconnected? Whats the benefit of upgrading to a fancy aftermarket stabilizer??

The purpose of a steering stabilizer is to tame the action of trucks and SUVs with oversized tires. When you equip your ride with larger tires, you may become a victim of the “shimmy” effect or the “death wobble.” But, a steering stabilizer ends the common vibration problem that larger tires can cause, smoothing out your ride. So, you get improved handling and better ride quality.


I have read that you should not drive without a steering damper. Mine was leaking and was shot (30 years old) . I have not seen any difference in truck since I replaced it, but I know it is doing its job and does not leak any longer

 

if you have those problems, the correct fix is not a steering damper.

i think that a steering stabilizer is there to absorb the shock of sudden jolts that change the direction that the tire is going, like hitting a pothole or something... it's just a shock absorber.
