What makes an SR5?
This has started to be discussed in the Post pics of your 84/85 Rigs thread but dont want that to get off topic. So, I started this tread. I did some searches but nothing to answer what all options make up an SR5.
Here is what I have. -1985 -Xtra cab -4x4 -22RE -5spd -stripes -tach -digital clock -second set of map lights -A/C -rear panel w/ holes for 6" speakers and nets under them for maps/papers. Could this be an SR5 or does it need to say SR5 somewhere on it like the seats? From what I have found, SR5's came with more chrome? What and where? Thanks all! |
not only sr5s came with chrome. i have a dlx and it came with crome. sr5 is for the fancy stuff. like the clock, a/c, maplights, the speedo cluster with the different gauges in it, etc. that kind of stuff
|
mine is an 84 Runner SR5
doesn't that stand for "Sport Rally 5 speed"? but yeah, A/C, maplights, dig clock, etc |
maybe, but if thats the case, then how can automatics be 'SR5' considering they arent 5 speed? also, when i was in vegas, i came across a 88 toyota truck that had air conditioning from the factory.... DLX edition. i think the guys who decided what accessories to put in the trucks were on crack... my buddy with an 87 DLX pickup has the sr5 gauge, a/c, maplights, and the black plastic grill. hasnt modified a thing. bought it from the dealership in 88 like that.

Way back when you could order almost anything you wanted, no a/c thats fine. Want chrome bumpers, yup. Want alloy wheels on a dlx, sure.
Now its all about packages, buy one and this is what you get unless you wanna wait for your truck to be built for you... SR5 generally has chrome, sliding window, the gauge cluster with tach, better seats, power windows and door locks and a/c. |
I bought my 1985 4x4 SR5 Xtracab new and the chrome package was an option. The problem was when you get to the "high end" model like the SR5, they tend to come with a lot of the options. AC did not come from the factory and was installed at the port. From the 1985 brochure, the 4x4 SR5 options were:
Chrome package Special paint package Window package (side vents and sliding rear windows) Sun/moonroof with removable shade Rear bumper Power package (cruise control, power windows, etc) Air conditioning Sport seats AM/FM/MPX stereo receiver w/3 speakers and cassette Electronic AM/FM/MPX tuner w/4 speakers, cassette, graphic eq (Xtracab only) Curious that the brochure shows the automatic transmission was not an option for 4x4s, which is wrong since I own one. |
Im going to go with a big fat no on mine being an SR5... O well. :hillbill:

Check your VIN plate for the model number and then go to 4Crawler's website to decipher ... a "S'" will indicate SR5.

my trail rig has no options but it sez sr5 on the back gate..no a.c no crhome no map light.
thats my 94 gold my 93 blue has all the options and chrome and it sez sr5 too |
mine isn't an SR5 but I do have bucket seats, digital clock, tach and full guage cluster, paint shows at 1 time it had stripes. no A/C. I can't even find DLX on it anywhere
|
I thought SR5 was the cheaper version? Or is just not as nice as Limited editions.
|
HEY NEW GUY.
welcome to the forum. be sure to check the date of the thread you're resurrecting from the dead. once upon a time, there were no "limited" versions, and sr5 was the higher end package. trucks came in base, deluxe, and SR5. also, if anyone else is interested in what options were available for a particular model year, check toyotareference.com. there's scans of actual Toyota brochures, and you can zoom in on each page, including the list of features and paint codes, etc. great site. |
.... Then you really want me to start a new thread? ... Thanks for the info.

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ToyVIN.shtml i just checked the plate in my own engine bay, and learned that my Runner was born a DLX. i always wondered about the mix of trim options it had: DLX gauge pod, but an SR5 emblem on the tailgate and chrome bits all over. seems someone added the emblem after a cheap repaint. which is ok because it fell off about a year ago! |
