sputtering 85 22r
My 1985 4x4 pu with 22r motor has been with me 20 years and has never given any trouble till now. At times it sputters like it is starved for fuel or something. It only seems to happen when I am accelerating, not on level ground. This is very intermittent, it may do this on the way somewhere, but after a stop at the store , it may run fine. I am not very good with mechanical things but am willing to give it a shot. So far I have run gas treatment in it, replaced the fuel filter, replaced spark plugs, replaced the rotor button and distributor cap and I still have the problem. Thanks for any help somebody could give. Thanks

fuel pump?

thanks I'm on my way to put it on right now.

did the fuel pump fix your sputtering

my 88 22REC sputters and runs like its only hitting on two cylinders, until its very warmed up and then its mostly ok
some days its fine though, on real nice and warmer days anyways very random and no one seems to have any idea at 147k miles i think this 22REC is about toasted new timing set and fuel filter is about all i have ever done to it oh, and the TPS has been dead for years |
Mine seemed to sputter in 3rd at low rpm's, I would downshift to 2nd then back up to 3rd and it would quit. Not sure what was causing it but I had a complete overhaul with a new fuel pump, filter, timing chain, gaskets redone, and vacuum advance. The fuel pump was leaking initially though. Truck runs like top now. Ready for another 200k miles

damn you did alot of work to yours then
so apparently it was a fuel issue or gasket issue i know mine is fuel because it is running VERY lean and i know the TPS directly affects fuel injection it idles fine basically, so as long as its not in drive or reverse, as soon as it is in gear it misses like a dead cylinder and does it during acceleration jerking bucking, no power haha so hmmm plus i noticed that in the last few days the steering is going bad real quickly, it is pulling ot the left all of a sudden and the steering sits very crooked to the right and the frame is on borrowed time 145k miles and its over it looks like haha scrap yard time :D 4 years on a free truck and all it ever needed was a new timing set and tensioner is pretty damn good in my book haha i didnt put even 20k miles on it though some cant be saved thanks |
^^ thats an prime example of a previous owner who is an idiot and doesn't take care of his vehicle. Very sad.

i'm having this same issue looked at now. idle smooth, stumbly at moderate accel around 2500 rpm, like say cruising 45-50 in top gear. they're telling me the timing is not advancing at the distributor, and its electronic, not vaccuum. they're gonna swap some used dists. they have to see if it clears it up. maybe you check there too? good luck

i am not sure what year they started but they used a fuel strainer on EFI models. dont know if they had that on the 22r there was no strainer on my 20r.
but it kind of sounds like what was on my 20r- check your timing over and over. with mine with the cam and carb i have to run it with the timing very advanced or it acts just like you are describing. OR it may be the vac advance in the dist.? good luck finding the gremlin. |
