yeah take the bolts out and lift it off

Aren't you smart Mr. Hayes. :) - Quite helpful also.
I have attached straps to the rafters in the garage. I park under them, then lift each corner and run the strap underneath and then back up to the ratched on the other rafter. I ratchet the topper up and just let it hang there. I find that since that space in the garage isn't *ever* used otherwise, it's an excellent storage spot for the topper. Obviously, you can still park your truck just under the topper all summer long.
I could take some pics if you'd like but I'm sure that you get the idea.

HTH.

I wasn't trying to be a comlpete ass...:booty:...but that's the only way to do it, your's is more a storage suggestion than a removal suggestion.

I would like to see them, if you don't mind. Just in case I get another first gen some day.

I use the straps to both remove and store mine:

Since I don't have a garage, I remove the bolts, slide it off the back and put one end on the ground (leaving the other end leaning on the truck), then I tilt it up, get underneath it, grab a grab handle with each hand, let it sit on my back and lift it and carry it to where I want it. The only thing you have to watch out for is if you are not on flat ground, when you slide it back it may slide off the side and gouge your paint. Been there done that fixed it with rattle can. :D I solved this whole issue with an STC though.

it's honest and it works...

be CAREFUL taking that thing off!! me and my dad took ours off, and somehow it fell off the side of the runner, thus pinning my fingers between the sharp plastic edge on the inside and the side of the truck. all i could do was let the thing slide to the ground. cut one finger on my right hand to the bone, and cut all the others on my left hand. and on top of that, it left a nasty scratch down the side. i was pissed...
