I am an old lady that is going to attempt to replace my icm. I have a few concerns. Everything I have read has said that it is dangerous but they don't say why I am going to disconnect the battery which I hope is what they referring to. Being old my memory is poor so I am concerned with whether I will remember the wiring correctly. I was wondering if I could remove and replace each wire one at a time before even removing the icm from the truck? Will that damage anything? What if there ends up an extra wire? Do the wires pull off the place where they attach? I am buying a new one from ebay at 230. Certainly not cheap and I must return it within 30 days if it doesn't work so I must be sure I can handle this. Can anyone advise me on these questions, if you think I might not be able to handle it? Here is a pic of it, the only plus in this is that it is mounted under the hood on the wall above the wheel well.

I'm wondering how your truck got the Ice Cream Maker option. I've been looking everywhere for that set up.

rokblok you jokster! Haha. Yes irbigbird it should be an easy for. I reccomend as you stated, replacing one plug at a time. Unplug then immediatly reattach to the new plug. transfer the plugs one at a time, un mount the old ECM, and mount the new one. If your worried about extra wires, count the number you have first then compare.

If we are talking about the ECM, on an '84 carb truck, isn't that located on the passenger front wheelwell? And it's not really an engine computer than a crude emissions control?

Or is the OP talking about an Ignition Control Module? Under the coil?

ignition control module. then part under the ignition that it is fastened to on the driver side inner wheel well

Well nothing comes easy. I got the new icm and discovered that my old part has a humped back part on top of the icm where the new one doesn't have that. I am not sure if that is a like strap clamp that holds it on the icm or what. One side appears to be unlatched? So my problem now is how to remove it from the old icm without damaging it as I don't know how to unattach it and also if I can use the old addition or if I need to buy a new one? As to a question from a reply, the icm is mounted on the wall above the wheel well and is easy access. I thought it would be simple but there are wires that come out of the bottom of it, etc. Hope someone knows what the humped back part is and can answer my questions.

BTW, it is a Ignition Control Module that supplies the spark, I am told.

Sounds like you picked up a newer ignition module. The plugs may be the same other than connections to the coil (which is the hump back part up top), but it will not be interchangeable with your old carbureted system. If mine wasn't hacked up I would let you have it for free... a replacement will probably be more expensive than the newer style.

good luck, and if you can get that replacement, it should be relatively simple to just unplug/screw, then hook back up.

Hi everyone
My truck is still sitting in the driveway broken down. I have been on a long futile ride trying to find the coil ignitor. Seems an impossible task. Most steer me toward a part that will not work. How can these people be in parts business and not know the part?
It takes me forever to find my last post so I can reply and I am sorry if you have been waiting for a post. I do have my part number from my part and I will post a pic for the prior poster. Here is the part number 89620-35140. Did I mention that my neighbor came over and started pulling wires slinging parts everywhere, an exaggeration, lol but I am glad I watched as he never came back and someone said I could handle putting it in and they were right, easy peasy! If I could ever find the part. I just found a wanted place here so I will put it there.

I do have one question that plagues me. Is it just the wires that I have to match. Lets say I find one that looks like mine even down to the wires but has different part numbers. Can I still use it? I ask because the people keep trying to sell me one that looks right but the wires are wrong. Mine has 2 wires with the same fittings and each has to wires with 2 contacts in the fittings. Most that they are trying to sell me only have a fitting with one wire and a fitting with 2 wires so the contacts are wrong.

I am still looking for an ignitor for my 84 2door extended cab sr5 toyota truck. RWD, carbed 2.4L. This is the part number on my ignitor. coil ignitor 89620-35140. My part was manufactured in 1983 which seems to be a deciding factor in finding the right part.
