repair manuals - Clymer by Lahue and Max Ellery book?
Im trying to track down a good manual or two. I have the '85 FSM on the computer, but am curious about the two manuals mentioned above:
Clymer 1st ed pub 1989 - By Kalton Lahue - Toyota Pickup and 4Runner, 2-Wheel and 4-Wheel Drive, 1984-1988 Shop Manual (Paperback) - runs about $18 on avg. http://www.42jeep.com/images/yota/clymer.jpg Toyota Hilux & 4 Runner Diesel Models 1979-1997 By Max Ellery http://www.42jeep.com/images/yota/ellery.jpg Are these manuals any better than say, the run of the mill Chilton's or Haynes manuals? In my previous restoration experience, the Clymer manuals are always better. Im just looking for a well illustrated and specific as possible manual for my 86 4runner DLX. |
I got a Max Ellery becuase I was interested in a 2LT swap.
Its about equivalent to Haynes but a litle beter (nicer pics). Certianly better than Chiltons (which IMHO is kinda useless) Probalby shoulda gotten a Aussie FSM instead |
I have a Haynes (decent), a Chiltons (crappy) and use those in combination with the online FSM (http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...sm/index.html).

For "noob maintence" get a copy of "how to keep your Toyota alive" on the Muir press.
A great one - basically a modded FSM - the Robert Bentley Toyota Trucks 1978-1988 (long out of print) Its Jeep but its entertaining - Granville King's Jeep Bible Mosel Ludel did a Toyota Pickup Bible... its ok - far better than say the Chiltons and more interesting too. |
Does anyone have the isbn number of the correct bently manual? i have an 85 4runner.
i found these two isbn's on line, two totally diff numbers but titles of the manuals are very similar. 083760253X 0837602580 . thanks |
ok, here is the title for the ...580 one: Toyota Pickup, 4Runner Service Manual: 1978-1988 Including Gasoline, Diesel, and Turbo Diesel...
and here is the one for the ...53x: Toyota Pick-up Truck and 4-Runner, 1978-1987: Service Manual this confuses me, which one is the one to get? or are they the same book? |
Don't know if they're of any help, but there's some other bits and bobs here:
ftp://ftp.bauchan.org/ The link is no speed demon, BTW. :D |
yeah, I noticed the similar but diff manuals too. which one is the right one?
No response on the first manual - the Clymer title? Lahue isnt a good professor? Damn, the cover sure makes me think its a good manual.....:) |
Bringing this back alive, What is the best manual to get, I have 1988 4x4 and need one?

Is there somewhere I can purchase the FSM in book form not online?
|
Toyota punlishing. :google:
|
Well I Googled Toyota publishing and there is no such thing, I'll just call the dealer sometimes trying to find info from you guy's is like pulling teeth.:horse:

I too own an 88, so would you please let me know if you can find a real 88 FSM. I've never seen one anywhere, including online, sorry. NOPE, the online 88 FSM doesn't cover the 3vze for whatever reason.:dunno: Not to mention that bit.torrent SUCKS and is WAY too complicated. Adobe Reader 8 please!! Thanks!!!:bigok:
But, between the online 93 FSM and the 1970-1988 Toyota Pick-ups/Land Cruiser/4Runner Repair Manual By Chilton, I am THE OFFICIAL 3vze EXPERT. I challenge ALL to defy my complete and total knowledge base with regards to that motor!!! Go ahead and try to tell me something I don't know about it, I DARE YA!!! BTW, that Chilton contains pics and procedures that I have NEVER found anywhere else. And I'd be lost without it!;) |

I'd ask how you did it, but like I said, bit.torrent is too complicated for me. So there's very little hope I'd understand.:con: So please DON'T try I've already taken enough Advil today. Software's not my strong suit, hardware on the other hand...I get that. 88 Repair Manual V6 SUPPLEMENT RM078 $40.70 Thanks man, I truly appreciate it! BTW...I, for one, really enjoy/find the entertainment value in your extreme cynicism. Keep up the good work!:great: |

Scuba YOU are proof that there are not any stupid questions just stupid answers.:booty: I got a lot of my knowledge by reading and FINDING IT FOR MYSELF. It's all out there. We ask that you take at least a minuet or two to use common sense and SEARCH on a topic your wondering about BEFORE you post something. I never said you had stupid questions. Just pointing put that you may be lazy and don't have enough common sense to look something up for yourself. That's all. I won't help you anymore. :dj: |
