Rear main seal
 

Any tips or tricks when doing the rear main seal? I have purchased the seal and new clutch.. I've done this on my TJ but not the 4 runner yet.. I sure don't want to do this job again if I have to more many years.. Any thoughts..

get the flywheel machined or buy a new one.

The RMS is fairly easy to replace on the 22REC. You don't have to drop the oil pan, however MAKE SURE TO REMOVE THE BOLTS ON THE OIL PAN DIRECTLY UNDER THE REAR MAIN SEAL LOCATION! This includes both back corners of the oil pan. If your 22RE is like mine was, the RMS housing was on with a gasket and some gorilla snot. Make sure to take your time, and once you have the 4-6 bolts off the RMS cover (housing) itself, and the 4 or so bolts off the oil pan **EASILY** work a screwdriver and or a gasket scraper between the block and the RMS cover. The cover is aluminum so treat it like a newborn working it with the screwdriver! It's easy get out once you have freed it, you'll be smiling when you get the flywheel off. The RMS actually is a bolted on cover which slide over the crank and bolts to the engine block. There aren't any pictures in the FSM, however it's a breeze. You'll find two paper gaskets and the main seal in your kit. You will only use one paper gasket and the seal (make sure you identify which one you need before scraping off the old one!)

when I dropped my tranny I left the cross member on and put jack stands under both sides of the cross member to help hold the tranny in place.

if I ever have to do a clutch again I would support the tranny and roll the truck away instead wrestling the tranny around.

in the FSM it shows how to remove the rear main with out removing the oil pan if your truck is lifted removing the oil pan is easy if it is not lifted then plan on unbolting the motor mounts and raising the motor to get the clearance to get the pan out to clean it up.

If it isn't too late,make sure that your replace the pilot and throw-out.
Your clutch master cylinder may eventually go after installing the new cluthc on the old master cylinder,atleast mine did.

The clutch kit I bought has the pilot and throw-out.. going to do it this weekend.. fun, fun fun....
