Thanks for compliments! It definitely takes some practice or like I did today went back and revisited it. Sand, grind, weld and grind a little more. Lol. I'm working on it to be smooth as can be because this is were rain water drains by. It's a little better. During yesterday's weather , we worked on the hood in the comfort of the living room . Pretty easy to do since I unbolted it from the truck.

Knowing where your truck used to live, on the North shore of Massachusetts, i think the pirate ship is perfect!

exactly! Plus all the Cape Ann decals and a new one from there for beach access still to add. The white and black just seems scull and cross bones like. And now we call it Black Beard.

themes can be fun! There is a Dodge truck around town painted or wrapped like the Jurassic park Jeeps in the first movie . We love it! All our cars need some sort of theam. My son came up with the WRECHO.

Ha , I don't remember were I came up with the battery upgrade now but I was fortunate that we had the next one up in the WRECHO. The only thing is it's about 1/2 inch taller so I stole the battery tray also. I got a new universal battery tray to replace it. Not paying 50 bucks for OEM. I could get some measurements for you but I bet you already have this one and there is something bigger for a 91. I remember the 90 I had looked like it had a big battery in it from day one but I went from an 81 Tercel to that. Maybe the Tercel had this same smaller battery .

speaking of batteries though I did some looking on the internet and found my $70.00 speacal from Costco doesn't usually last 2 years. Worst part is we have 3 of them now. One is about a year old. We will see what happens.........

after grinding down the big gobbie welds and adding some seam sealer and liberal coats of rust encapsulator one corner is done . I have the same support off on the drivers side now. This time I didn't go so nuts drilling the spot welds out so it shouldn't be such a job to fix.

it was the best of grinds, it was the worst of grinds. .
I lost a close friend today :
In Memory of Brent's Angle Grinder
(2012 to 2019)
I used to enjoy playing with this angle grinder for hours on end.

It was a Ryobi 4 inch grinder and it made a lovely noise.

Today the grinder made a less lovely noise and stopped working. I was very sad.

I don't even know that angle grinder anymore, lol.
back to the grind with two new ones in each hand, I'm coming for you Rusty!

since I've been stuck in the garage due to weather I've been working on making the bumper solid again. The corners were rotted out and filled with expandable foam that made things worse. I did the best I could with it for now it's going to need more work later but I don't want to spend too much time energy and resources on the bumper right now.

I need to get back to work and on the driver side quarter.

Damion812 03-07-2019 05:55 AM

Just a little teaser photo. In between welds I've been working on making the windshield frame solid again. Since I'm not taking the windshield out of it yet, that'll be something to do later. The windshield really does need to come out of this thing like a lot of them there is a lot of rust on the frame lots of holes to fix and the windshield slightly diagonal and looks like it moved while the adhesive was setting on some replacement at some time in its life. But that would be something when I do the full restoration. Right now we just want to drive it. So I didn't take a whole lot of pictures to show the process I wouldn't recommend it but if you are low on money J-B Weld can be some great stuff.

Well I'm finally done cutting pieces out of the front drivers side quarter panel and working my way up to the cowl.

Wow. A lot of work. Subscribed. Off to read your VW build. A minty family '64 was my first car.

Damion812 03-12-2019 09:44 AM

Yeah, you have to copy and paste the link I put on the beginning of the thread. I messed up And it doesn't go right there .

a 64 though, the last year before they went to the slightly bigger windows and the first year of the larger licence plate light housing.

Nervo19 03-12-2019 06:05 PM

I enjoyed your thread and looked at some of your photostream. Is this the before of your Herbie? It looks almost identical to my ivory '64 after I let Earl Scheib loose on it. I didn't have a whale tale either. I call it Earl Sheib red because factory red bugs were not this shade. I always hated that they painted the wheels red too. I didn't know any better so I still had ivory sills and dash. My mom bought it new for my dad to commute while she drove a mom mobile. It had the radio delete which I bet is rare.

That's before, before of Herbie 😂 the previous owner sent us some old photos and that's early 80s . Earl Shives paint. He had it painted a similar red a second time, by professionals. Then I took it down to bare metal for the bright white it is today.

I like the VW red (Ruby Red) but always liked that brighter red!

cool story on your 64 though. I wish I got into those VWs earlier but loved Toyotas since my first starting with an 82 Tercel .
