Powersteering conversion
 

Hi I'm new to the site but I hope that you all can help me with a problem. I have an 85 Toyota 4x4 on 34x10.50 Swamper LTB's with no powersteering I was wanting to convert my truck to powersteering because it is no fun to drive as it is and the only time I drive it is in hunting season and even then it kinda bites. I was wondering what parts I need and what models might have parts I could use I have found all kinds of IFS trucks in junkyards but no straight axle trucks with powersteering. :bang:

A few weeks ago, i had a complete p/s system for an 85 4X4 p/u solid axle.
It had everything you needed! the box, hoses, pump & bracket it would've bolted right in.

I gave it away....

Get the IFS box and go with crossover steering. It will cost a little more but you will be much happier getting rid of that push pull steering.

Yeah i second that go crossover.

Your parts list will include:
All lines and brackets (you need a whole new alternator bracket that includes the ps pump) The pump itself, the reservoir, steering box

Almost as helpful as yours.



OP: You will need several parts for this conversion:

1. Pump
2. Pump bracket
3. Pump bracket support bracket (Y shaped)
4. Reservoir
5. Return line (from reservoir to pump)
6. Return line (from gear to reservoir, includes a looped "cooler line")
7. Pressure line (pump to gear)
8. Steering gear
9. Pump tensioner bracket w/pulley
10. Belt
11. Harmonic balancer outer pulley (for PS belt)

If you do not already have crossover steering, I would suggest doing the conversion. Factory J-arm steering leaves much to be desired, especially when offroad.

I believe Downey sells the pump conversion kits, but you can also find them at wrecking yards. Wrecking yards like you friendly Nix99 :) Nix99 Toyota Parts

FWIW, IFS and SFA rigs use the exact same pwer steering system, just the gear is different.

He doesn't need any fancy new alternator bracket. The PS pump brackets are separate the alternator bracket, and its all just a bolt on affair.

to further answer you question,

PUMP
you can use any pump from any year with the 22R

PUMP BRACKET WITH PULLEY BELT TENSIONER
You can use any bracket & tensioner from any year with a 22R a little modification to the holes may be needed to fit your block under some circumstances, I am also positive the alternator bracket and the power steering bracket are completly seperate

I know the above statements are true cause I have a 81 22R pump, tensioner and bracket that has jumped motors from a82 to 87 to 89 so it has fit on all types of block configurations WITH a very little modification to the bolt pattern. Using a step bit and a larger washer was my trick.

RESEVOIR any will work you may need to get creative to mount if you got a second gen one your chances of a having the mounting spots on your wheel wheel are good.

VENT LOOP any will work there is a U shaped pipe that fits in front of your radiator to cool the pump fluid

V-BELT yea a belt

HIGH PRESSURE LINE its ONE high pressure line that connects between pump and gear box

EDIT: DC BEAT ME TO IT LOL the third row on your harmonic balancer

LOW PRESSURE LINE its TWO low pressure lines that go from resevoir to pump and resevoir to vent loop then to gear box

GEAR BOX you can find a SFA push and pull style box that has the taps in it for the powersteering fluid lines.

THATS IT! you can find all this stuff on CL and E-bay or your favorite local junkyard.

NOW if you want cross over steering buy everything above except the SFA gear box and find a IFS style steering gear box and purchase a high-steer kit and weld on mounting plates for your new ifs box.

Cross over steering can only be installed on vehicals lifted 3" or more

Cross over steering is stronger, cool, and gives you a much better turning raduis over the old low steer push and pull setup. But will cost you another $450 on top of other crap you need.

Once you get all the stuff gathered and need more assitance I will be more than happy to help
