On ther 1985, it will be a yellow 2 pin plug near the air cleaner. Jump the 2 pins together. There is two plugs, other is a 4 pin. Both kinda park in rubber cups on the inner fender next to the air cleaner. Jump the 2 pin, read the blinks of the check engine light.

ok i tried that but nothing happened. i guess what i figured is true. dealer i bought ttruck from disconnected engine light. either that or light is out, but i doubt that. is there no plug to connect that code reader into then ?

Are you using the round plug or the "T" shaped one? The "T" one only powers up the fuel pump. You should of ran the round one.

See:

The one circled in light blue:

I got my code reader at Office Depot:

are they plugged into anything ? or those rubber sockets just to hold them? cause mine were just laying around dangling.

Rubber sockets are just there to hold them, one usually has a rubber cap and the fuel pump test jumper just hangs loose. They are diagnostic plugs, only needed when doing troubleshooting. I hard wired some of mine to switches for ease of use:

They are usually just hanging around when someone checks the air filter, knocks it our of the rubber socket. The rubber socket just keeps them tidy looking. The other member posted a perfect picture of the sockets. The large yellow 4 pin one is used to set VF learned, great to know if you ever have to calibrate a air flow meter, but of no concern to you as of yet.

ok so i pulled my gauge cluster out to check bulbs..all bulbs fine...all fuses fine both inside and in engine compartment. My check engine light never turns on. even when key turned to ON and/or IGN . nor does it blink or anythign when i jump that connector to diagnose. did you see what i asked about the ECU only having 22R written on it

4Crawler Feb 4, 2007 11:50 AM

Yep, they all have 22R on the ECU boxes. Maybe the ECU is bad of the CEL light is not coming on, or maybe the wires between the check connector and ECU are bad, check for continuity at the ECU connector.
