My Runner Is Revving For No Reason :(

I have an 84 4runner with 103,000 on it so i can't imagine anything is seriously wrong with the engine...but after I washed my engine, it will stay revving high as if the autochoke is stuck on or something. I found similar threads to this but no one with the same problem as me..any one know what might cause this? I've been having to drive it to school like this so its chugging my gas like no other! Thanks!

I had a similar problem with my '90 pickup, What I would do is check the throttle return spring, and the throttle cable, if that's the case, go crazy with the Carb cleaner and WD-40, also spray some carb cleaner in the throttle body.

throttle body cleaner works better. my truck sometimes will do that or it will rev then drop rev then drop. can usually get it to stop by pumping the throttle a lil bit in neutral. i think it may have to do with the throttle positioning sensor. but a good cleaning never hurts.

Since you have an '84 like me, I'm going to assume you have a carb and not EFI. I have the same problem with mine from time to time, try these:

-check throttle cable not stuck between aircleaner and valve cover ( done that)
-spray carb throttle linkage with WD40 (more is better :D)
-spray some carb cleaner at the throttle plates with the air cleaner off, also some WD40 on the hinge pins to lube them up
-spray some carb cleaner the WD40 down the throttle cable
-check and lube (yup, WD40 again :D) the gas pedal inside the cab.

failing all those, time to take the carb off and give a good once over with a rebuild kit and a few bottles of carb cleaner :(

K thanks, I'm going to go rip off the air filter and all that crap...I'll update once i've tried all of those things.

Okay, it's still revving high and I've gone through the steps mentioned above. Does anyone know how to adjust the autochoke??

my 85 has had all those problems. when i clutch in at a stop it will rev and drop about 4 or 5 times. only rev about 500 rmps or so but enough i can notice it. also one day i went through a huge mud puddle and when i came out when all the water cleared my engive was revin at liek 2500 and i wasnt even on the throttle.. that freaked me out and i looked at everthing and it was fine so then i just ran it out and it went away. cruizin at like 40 mph made it go away. it does it when i run through water. still have no clue why but mine only does it then. also i have EFI
