Made it to Big Bear... Barely...
Well, im up at my parents house in Fawnskin (across the lake from BBC). A drive that normally takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours, took me 5. The truck started bucking real bad, like shutting off and then firing back up, at 60. I almost poo'ed myself when it happened. Very, very violent hesitation. then, it didnt do it till i was coming up the hill and would do it under load. I am pretty convinced its a fuel problem, but dont know where to get a pressure tester, or anything up here that might help. Who knows, also, pardon my typo's, im typing with my contacts out. It also ran at 200-210 degrees up the hill. I talked to jonny briefly tonight about it and he doesnt think that 210 is too bad. Well, if anyone has experienced this before, or something along these lines, let me know. Well off to bed as i am falling asleep typing. Night everyone.

I would check/replace the fuel filter, and then check your plugs/cap/rotor. If you think it's fuel then start there, begin at the tank/filter, then the lines to make sure they are OK, then the fuel pump/carb under the hood. Systematically eliminate things until you can't recreate the problem.

If you have a carb then the high elevation may be messing up your air fuel mixture. Just a thought.

Thats what im thinking. Who knows, been fine the whole time up here, minus holding it at around 4k for like half a mile. Went wheeling in my usual spot up here, got to the bottom of the hill, only to find the gate locked, and that we couldnt get back up the hill, so i took the creek back up a few miles, in about 2 feet deep snow. yeah, it sucked. Going home today, need my own bed. Well, ill post up the few pics we got when i get home, packing up now. OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!! Got some wicked hot sauce for christmas!!! stuff is bomb!!! Also got some other items to which i can not name from a military buddy, but cool none the less.

Had a similar situation, Wiring harness on my igniter was loose. Also, the igniter requires a good ground otherwise it will not fire

when my fuel pump died there was no fuel in the sight glass on the carb..

i live and in lake arrowhead and my buddy was running a 22r. he took it up and down the mountain no problem, i think he took it to big bear too. i dont think the elevation is causing your problems

took my rig up to Bryce, Zion, top of the hill at Death Valley, and yesterday to to 7k here in the Western Sierra's.
So it may just be an issue with your carb... Do you still have the High altitude thing on your motorr? |
dude, did you got the back way through pioneer town to get to big bear or did you take 247 to ca 18 up that way when i was stationed out in 29 we would always go up the back way to bigbear.. fun times
are you injected or you carborated...? your temp isnt nothing serious you work going up a hill.. and working the engine... after 220's you might want to start worring about stuff.. |
Sounds like Vapor lock to me.

run some of that seafoam in your gas tank and dump some in your carb and intake.. you will get good results in minutes...

I'd check that the fuel level in the carb is proper. A bad filter could keep the fuel bowl from keeping itself full and consequently cause a lean condition.
200-220F should not be enough to cause issues but temps that high could cause problems with a fuel mixture that's already too close to being too lean. It may be worthwhile to check your ignition timing, and check your total advance too. There may be an issue with the distributor bringing in too much advance too soon, and not retarding it when vacuum drops- you have the dual diaphragm canister on the distributor? |
Abe, the 84 is gone. But the fuel filter was new. I think it might have been the timing, the smog guy said it was at 13 degrees, so he put it back down to 5. That truck was honestly completely screwed up, i bought a piecer and didnt know it.
