What is the spring for in the hub ?

The big one? There is the obvious on and the one that goes behind the detent ball on the dial. I don't think there is another but I haven't gone through a set I a while. I have a few spare sets floating around if I need to rebuild them. Look on Craigslist and see if you can find a pair cheep.
