Hubs ?
 

I have an 85 toyota 4x4 and my hubs are leaking, i also have a set of hubs from a 91 ifs toyota 4x4 that are good, can i swap the 91 ifs hubs on to my truck ?.

Yeah they will work. When I had my 1990 - I bought a set from a 1985 and they mounted fine. Gaskets are cheap for those hubs - like a $1.00 a piece.

1985 SFA Aisin manual hubs and 1990 IFS Aisin manual hubs are NOT interchangeable.

SFA are 30 spline, 1990 IFS are 27 spline

Yep - I'm wrong - the hubs came from an IFS rig that I used.
Had a brain fart there ! Happening a lot more as I get older.

Just my luck that they won`t work. were can i get the gasket to fix the leak, its leaking around the center part of the hub that you turn to lock the hubs.

Hub Outer Dial O-Ring
There is a small rubber O-ring located between the inner and outer hub dials. If this ring becomes damaged water and dust can leak into the hubs. It can also make turning the dial difficult. Easy to install using snap ring pliers and a 10mm socket.

Ok, so the only difference is the spline count on the inner hub gear, is that right ?, if i changed the inner hub gear over to a 30 spline then it should work, right or wrong ?. (this is my first toyota so im trying to learn this stuff).

Nope, the hub assembly depth is different.

You will need manual hubs off of a 79-85 Toyota SFA, but rebuilding them will probably fix the leaks. New O-rings are a heckova lot cheaper than new hubs. Try that first.

What i have is the cap assembly off the 90, not the complete hub (the cap that bolts to the hub with six 10mm bolts), thats why i asked if you just change the hub gear to a 30 spline would they be the same ?.

I hate being a noob and not knowing this stuff, so i have to ask and learn as i go.

Yep, that should be fine, but note that the SFA hub dial has a curved face and the IFS hub dial has a flat face...otherwise I think they are identical in size, shape and function.

You should figure out what is leaking out od the hub, should not be anything back there to leak out, aside from the wheel bearing grease. That is unless you have a leaking inner axle seal and gear oil is mixing with and washing the grease out of the hub. If so, fixing the hub will only be masking the real problem.

From what i can tell there is a little grease leaking out around the dial, its not major, i just want to fix the leak before it turns into a big mess. this truck was beat when i got it, so im slowly going through it fixing all the problems it has and this is just one of many on the list that i have to fix.

Might be worth pulling the hub to see what is going on with the grease. Normally there won't be any inside the hub (aside from a thin film), so if there is, find out where it is coming from. Could be gear oil or water inside flushing the wheel bearing grease out, or it might have been someone packing the hub with grease at some time in the past.

Hubs leaking? Its not the hubs leaking, its the front axle grease (oil) leaking into the trunions from a worn inner axle seal. Repalce the inner axle seal, and consider new trunion bearings. Not, this is a messy job, you wont have a clean rag left in the entire household!

If you are going to tear into the axle to replace the inner axle seal, just get a knuckle rebuild kit w/ wheel bearings for $145 w/ free UPS ground shipping and do the whole thing for peace of mind for a long time. Let me know if I can help you with something.

I need to :bump: this up, As mentioned earlier. if the seals go out it washes away the grease, i think this is happening on mine because i got a leak and its always dirty black oil, I just changed out the gear oil my front end too, so i think its mixing. So how long does it usually take to rebuild both sides(wheel bearings,all seals,etc?

have everything i need, i says it has bearings, im assuming there wheel bearings. thanks

that looks like the complete kit, but why chance it - buy the kit from marlincrawler or some other reputable dealer in this forum. then you know you get everything you need, japanese quality, and fast reputable service.

i am no skilled mechanic, the job took me several days, mostly cleaning things and drinking beer. i could do it again in one day. while you are in there, examine all the bearings. i got marlin's bearing kit in the first place since i didnt want to go back in there any time soon.

dont forget the 54 mm formed socket. you are dead in the water without it. there are several good how-to's on the net (4crawler, 4x4wire, marlincrawler) complete with pictures and good tips.
