how strong is your stock axle
im looking into to getting some new tires, i wanna go with 36'' iroks, my issue is can my basically stock axles handle that big of a tire or do i need to upgrade.
i have a 91 sas ext cab. stock rebuilt front axle with tg highsteer. am i gonna start breaking stuff right away. also my steering in stock too. |
They should be able to handle it. but it doesn't hurt to look into investing in some new shafts. I'd say 37s are your max.
Your steering definitely isn't stock with highsteer. You'll have no problems with steering. |
do you have lockers? i wheel the crap out of 35's and havent busted an axle yet but the birfs will be your weak link. with lockers you can snap stuff when your stuffed tire is basically glued to a rock and all the torque is going right there snap!!

You'll have no problems with steering. im finding a few sets of pretty much new 36x13.5 iroks, i tried buying a new set of 35x12.5 goodyear mtr's but they stopped making them apperently and it will be a few months before they make the next batch ( this is what i was told from a guy at goodyear) |

I've seen folks run 39.5" boggers on stock axles but they didn't last long. Stock birfs just aren't meant for big tires other than at the mall. :D

I have seen people bust axles with 31" and 37" tires and others with 37" tires never have a problem on stock drivelines. A lot of it has to do with your driving style in my opinion.

^ And your location. Wet woods are alot more forgiving than dry rocks.

Just buy a set of longfields or Trail Gear Dirty thirty and be done with it! You might not break, but you're pushing those axles. I'd rather spend a little more money up front and not have to worry about having to swap axles on the trail.

I would definitely upgrade your front axles
..my dirty 30's (compliments of da wabbit) seem to be holding up great. If you don't upgrade I would at least pick up a set of spare axles($100'ish) andpractice changing..they tend to implode when you don't expect it. |

I run 35" tires and a Lock-Rite in the front. Never an issue with stock axle SHAFTS. Blew a birf 4 years ago uphill, reverse, full turn. Replaced stock BIRFS with Longfields stock swap 27 spline birfs. No issues since. Birfs were a little over $200 each. My 2 cents.
