how much boost can the stock 22RTE handle?

how much boost can the stock 22RTE handle? i know its got like 7.5 or 8:1. but how stong is the block, pistons and rods? are there any weak links in there or is this a mini 2jz? iron i imagine? hopefully nothing like that honda FRM crap. TIA

just pump it with thirty pounds and see what happens! thats probably not a good idea. :scared:

Google Jeff Moskovitz.

it won't handle much over what it came with. the compression ratio is good(7.5:1) but the pistons are cast. but it seems that mostly the computer can't really deliver the fuel for higher boost.

for more of a performance application most guys seem to end up going with an aftermarket ECU.

whats the best ecu for us? AEM or tec3?

kyle_22r 05-08-2006 01:46 PM

most guys seem to end up going with the megasquirt or SDS setup.

none of these sites have a pecific number of pounds or anything on the max hp, boost, trq or anything about the stock motor. all i saw was about the cast pistons, maybe i over looked something about the cylinders? whats the background on the block, iron, aluminum or steel? waht kinds sleeves does it have.

The motor can probally hold 15-20 lbs with just arp headstuds. The bottom ends on 22r's are pretty stout. You problem is going to be getting the motor fuel. There arnt many people who would (or could) tune a 22ret.

I'll be more specific about that.. the lower end can handle all kinds of power.. The crank and rods, even in stock form hold up to a lot of abuse.
Kyle is right, the pistons are cast... So are the pistons in my SRT-4.. You just need to have good control over your A/F.

The limitation that kyle mentioned is the ECU. You can get a turbo that flows a lot more air at 7-8psi and have that air be cooler.. there is a celica getting 170 rwhp out of a stock ECU.

The trick to making these things build power is to replace the turbo & go with an aftermarket ECU.

one way you can goo about it is add a GotPropane.com conversion kit. this draws the correct amount of fuel no matter how much boost. plus it is about 110-115 octane so add a 22RE head to bump compression and add a TEC upgraded turbo kit and throw some boost at it.

one of the TEC employees i talked to said he made over 300 hp at like 35 lbs. for drag racing. and somewhere around 200+ on the street with i think 13 lbs or so.

i am planning on these mods soon on my 86' if i don't buy another truck first.

I would do a fuel system, one with a raising rate fuel pressure regulator, I would do that and upgrade the fuel pump itself....

will definitely be good for more boost, another idea, if it doesnt have one

find a nice, small intercooler to plumb in...

another idea is to run an MSD 6BTM, allow for optimal boost and timing retardation, as well as more complete combustion...all of these things will enable you to increase your boost and thus power, in a safe, efficient manner

I just broke number 3 cylinder in half lol the injector came unplugged at 22pounds boost it was making 400 wheel HP new block is almost done try it again

Pics or it didn't happen....:saw:
