HELP! Bad idle surge after changing head and timing belt
I replaced the old head and timing chain along with the timing cover, water and oil pump. Timing's set and when it starts it runs, but surges moderately fast. Ive have every vac line off and pluged and reapplied to find out whats going on and i cant... please help! Any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated! 1985 22re Toyota Dolphin (motorhome)

Clamp off the big vacuum line on the bottom of the throttle body leading to the idle air control valve. If the idle drops that's your problem. Also does it change wether the motor is cold or hot?

Let me rephrase that a bit. Knowing that a cold motor is supposed to run at a higher RPM the clamp off test is something to be done to a warm motor. If you are at running temp and the idle is running high it could be because that valve isn't closing. Clamping it off would test to seen if it is closing properly or not.

When clamping off that hose to IACV when the car is cold it should drop in RPM, when the car is at operating temperature is should drop no more then 50 rpm when clamping off hose.

Could be TPS. Easy enough to test. I just went through a rebuild and had idle issues afterward. I've been chasing it for a bit. I tested my IACV during the rebuild and it tested OK. It has since crapped out and I can't get my idle to drop below @1300. My idle air screw on the throttle body is all the way seated. If I clamp the hose the motor dies. I have a new IACV arriving in a week so hopefully life will be smooth at about 750-800.

I hope that works for you brother! I called the local Advance to see about getting a IACV and they said the damn thing was discontinued but it cost $206!? Im hoping its my TPS lol!! I dismantled the throttle body last night and cleaned it up testing the sensor here in a bit and im gonna check the timing for the 4th time. I'll keep you posted, and let me know how the new IACV works out for you and if you happend to get it at a more affordable price then i was quoted! thanks!

IACV still available
22230-35030 VALVE ASSY, AUXILIARY $212.34
I would try adjusting your TPS first though, it had fixed my surging idle previously. I used 4crawler's writeup.

I just ordered one from toyotapartsdeal.com in norwalk CA and they had it in stock (2nd gen 22RE). Not cheap though.

Oh I'm golden i got 3 used spare ones just not available new anymore. I took them all apart, cleaned, anti-seized screws, rust converted, and adjusted.
I'm more wondering about your truck and surge issue. Looking forward to hear the results and hopefully a success story.

Erratic Idle breaks cause it to almost stall
So as some if you may know I recently put a new head on our 22re Toy along with a new water pump, oil pump, timing chain (w/metal guides and tensioner) and a new Throttle positioning sensor. After all of that work we drove it around town for a few days and then it sat in the back yard while we finished/ are finishing up the interior. In that month of siting I replaced the mid pipe of the exhaust out to a new one and have been starting it up and running it to keep it used to being ran. Now, it has an erratic idle and when you push the breaks it all but stalls out 😩 I'm ready to pay someone to diagnose and fix it, unless one of you here have experienced the same issues. Thank you in advance and for all the help you've already been 😃

Try burping the system. Raise the front end as high as possible, I am 6 foot and get the core support up to my chin. Being a motor home you wont be able to get it that high but you should still get the idea of what you want to do. After getting it high, run the motor with out the radiator cap and let it cycle the thermostat 3 or 4 times to get the air out of the system. Air in the system will cause erratic idling.
