Help with 85 front axle
I picked up a partially built front axle from a friend for my 86 4runner that I plan to do a SAS once I get the axle together and find someone to help me cut and weld... I started on the axle and I have a couple of questions that I am hoping you guys can help me with.
1) Grease for the knuckles/birfields. I did a search and didnt really come up with a definitive answer... Do I have to use a moly fortified grease on the birfield joints and knuckles? I have the 85 truck manual here at my dealer and it says Molybdenum disulphide lithium based grease which I am assuming is the same as above. Can I use just a regular wheel bearing grease? I have bobby longfield Birfields and dont want to destroy them using the wrong stuff. 2)My friend took the knuckles off of the truck, which now as I look at the repair manual I think I am looking at a disaster, and the shims arent in any order. I can only find 2 of the shims with all the parts that he gave me...I have a knuckle rebuild kit that he gave me which has new shims, I also have another set that came with my trail-gear SAS kit...so my question is, is there any easy way to shim the knuckles? I am not sure if my dealer even has the SST that the manual calls for to do it, I pretty sure I have never seen anyone use spring tension gauge :dunno: Any help is appreciated, sorry if this is a redundant question. -Mike (in the time it took me to type this I found the sst 09634-60013...but the damn bar is missing that goes on the top for the spring tension gauge to hook too :pissed:, I am also missing the insert that goes in the housing with the pointed tip that goes into to scribe the line into the alignment tool) |
