first rebuild-Checking a few things
Hey after a timing chain install and adjusting some lifters i turned it over and poof i see steam outta the last cylander and i quickly shut it off. i'm not rich so when i saw that i felt like hitting the car. well i've decided i'm going to have to finally change the headgasket after useing barsleak. but since i'm going in the far i was gonna get the rebuild kit from engbldr i just have a few questions:
i'll only need to order the stock size rings and pistons right? is there any way i can just get the head cleaned and steamed because that might be cheaper then rebuilding when i took the valve cover off everything looked nice? and is there way i can hone the block myself? that could save me some money. if there's anything else you think i should know or would help please help this is was my daily driver till it died and then i had my aunts old 88 ford festiva that now won't pass smog without money and i'd rather put that money in my truck. |
i just did a full rebuild on my 22re, as in everythin, i bored it 40 over, new valves, crank was ground, all new bearings and seals, i used the kit from engin builder, it was very good, now your talkin about a bare rebuild, in theory you should be ok, if u buy a cylinder honer from a parts store, and do that yourself depending on how much lip there is on the cylinders, but there are no garantees that way, and as for the head most of the time it can just be cleaned up and decked, but valves do need to be replaced at times, and if your head gasket blew theres a good chance our block is "pitted" and will need to be decked as well for a good seal, best thing to do would be send it to a machine shop and see what it needs, mine cost about 1300canadian for a new engine, so its very resonable, expecially when i have all the extras, OS valves, performance cam, dual valve springs etc, so best advice would be do it right.

Yes, take the block to a machine shop first and see what needs to be done to it. Then go from there.

Pull head, check for cracks - burnt valves, spring strength... pull pistons and use reamer to remove lip at top of cyl.... then run mic. down bore and check wear and taper in cylinderwall -- this will let you know if you can get bye with your current pistons and just get rings for it or if you need to bore it out -- then you are looking at a major rebuild. Check clearances and wear on your bearings, etc.....
Did you get a "kit" for the timing chain and such... if so from whom...?? LRB Also anybody else out there know who has a good set for timing chain including metal guides...???? thanx (for 84 22R) |
