Engine swap options with o body lift

So I love my 22RE but I just added a Exo-Cage and am looking for more power to get to the trails. I already have 4.88's and dual cases (21 spline) and am looking to go with the combo of Easiest, Best Torque Curve, Most Cost effective.

I've been looking at the 3RZ and the old supra engines. I don't need more pwer for crawling with the dual cases, and don't want a ton of power either so my drivetrain stays pretty bulletproof. Just looking to get more power below 3500 rpm and be a little more fun to drive on the street, as well as kicking some ass in the mud

Thanks

nice 4runner . I also have a white 85 its stock though . just wondering , how much your exo-cage weighs ? I wonder if you put a nice performance head with a decent cam, headers and exhaust if that would give you the little extra power you would want

I'm guessing about 350 lbs. it's 5 sticks of DOM and sliders and bumpers are probably near 200-250? pounds. Plus the winch is about 80 pounds or so... Factoring all the other armor, extra case, tires and beadlocks and misc. stuff not counting HI-Lift and recovery tools (or me, my dog and and camping gear) I've probably added 900-1000 lbs... Holy Cow! I swear I wasn't trying to build a tank

I'm running 4.88's right now and Trail Gears Coald air intake and headers and thinking for what it takes to get 150 hp. I could swap a new engine for not much more I was thinking if the 1JZ non turbo would fit with a W58 I just have to swap my Transfercase input? And slap her in and rewire her? It seems like it will fit with the motor mounts and radiator, any issues ill run into along the way? Is it a much tougher install than I think?

I should have said in the beginning as well please Toyota made engines only way to loyal to ever leave a Yota engine

I would say either 3rz or 3.4L swap and just add a hood scoop of some kind to clear it.

My 3RZ didn't require a scoop. Only thing that needed clearancing was a small section of the hood ribs where it bumped the power steering reservoir cap.

My buddy is swapping in a 3rz right now, i think if your looking for a little extra umph this would be good for you. Nothing outragous so your not going to break stuff and you can still have fun with it. And the damn things will run almost upside down. Just make sure all your main parts are from the same truck. Piecing harnesses together isn't fun and really drags out the process.

Buick/Pontiac 3.8l might work

I'd love to stick a GN motor in a Toy...

donomite49 09-23-2013 04:28 PM

I'd say a 2.7 or a 3.4.
Having gone from a 22re to a 3.4 in my truck I would probably lean toward the 3rz. For a trail oriented rig with little or no towing the lighter weight of the four banger would be a little more nimble imo.

If you need more power you can always go with a turbo or a supercharger.

Gn= grand national?
I'd rather have the newer Pontiac version the 3800, turbo or supercharged idr which

rokblok 09-24-2013 04:23 AM

Yeah, a Grand Nat'l engine would be cool.

Ok, back on topic....

3rz with a KO racing turbo kit. 200hp with lots of torque in the range you are looking for (if you go for the smaller turbo)
