Engine Noise at Startup
 

I recently had my 22RE rebuilt about a month ago and I have only put about 60 miles on it. When I go to crank it after it has sit overnight, it makes some type of noise for less than 5 seconds and then it clears up. It's not a knock or a rattle. It doesn't sound like a broken chain guide. It is the early style 22R. It's an 85 model 4Runner but it was manufactured in late 84. I was wondering if it could be the rocker arms needing to be adjusted (I know they need to be readjusted after break-in). Other than that, it fires right up, runs great, purrs like a kitten, and runs strong on the road. It just has a weird noise at startup. If you have any ideas, let me know!

It sounds like a weird (clack clack clack) noise and only lasts a few seconds. It's hard to describe. If I had a video camera with audio I'd upload it and let you listen to it.

Listen, don't make fun of me ok? I just asked a bad question and didn't give all the details. I don't know everything there is to know about Toyota's (I'm not trying to have an attitude by any means).

Like I said before, it runs great at idle and driving down the road. It doesn't make any other noises except that.

The sound could be piston slap.

id say your not getting the correct amount of oil for the first few seconds. do you have a manual gage in there?

Yeah, it has a gauge, no idiot light.

ok. watch it during start up and see if there is a small delay from the time it starts to the time the gage starts reading.

mine made a strange clack clack on startup sometimes too then after a 2hr highway drive my starter motor fell out LOL

The gauge has a delay when it cranks up.

if its in front of the engine chances are its the timing chain. the aftermarket timing chains arent as good as toyota. mine is doing the same thing. clatters at startup and goes away.

I don't think it's the chain, I know the noise you're talking about. This is different. My brother's pickup sounds like that when it starts up (of course it has 327,000 miles on it).

Mine makes a noise at startup when cold. Its from the exhaust manifold not sealing to the head (due to studs pulling out). When the manifold warms up, it expands enough to seal the gap.

Thanks for your input guys, I really appreciate it. When I get some time I'm gonna start troubleshooting. Feel free to give me more ideas and I'll let you know if anything changes.

what kind of oil/ filter are you using?

It's a NAPA gold filter, I usually run a Toyota filter on it, but that's what the guys put on it at the machine shop. I haven't changed it for the first time yet, I've only put a little over 200 miles on it the past 2 days. I run 10W-30 Valvoline in it.

I've been doing some thinking. I just got done looking through my Haynes manual. The oil viscosity chart is saying that from around 40 degrees Farenheit and above that I should be running 10W-40, and below 40 degrees I should run 10W-30. I am currently running 10W-30 in it. Could that be part of the problem?

The temperature where I live here in North Carolina is in the high 80's to the low 90's for the most part of the summer. I was talking to one of my friends today and we got to talking about it and was wondering if the lighter weight oil could be what's causing this noise. If yall have any clues let me know! Thanks!
