Change the good 22re into a 22r and put in the 83 or
 

K, new on the forums but read a shovel load and love it.
So got an 85 best for rust ive seen and fibreglass box sides. 22re auto and stripped it - not a bolt left in frame or body and took it to the painters.
also got a complete 84 diesel with 160 km on it - nice mech. shape but rusty.
one more - 83 short box 4 speed - 22r shot

I would love opinions. My plan to put the 58 hp diesel (2l) drive train in and do a stock top to bottom rebuild on the 85 that used to be a 22re auto. silly?

Also, from experience and opinion, would it be better to change the good 22re into a 22r and put in the 83 or put the 85 22re auto with injection in.

Again thanks for any input. i`ve got 9 Toyota trucks/suvs but have finally started building them up. Haven`t had any experience with the diesels or 22r.

22R is a fine motor. Leave it alone.

I'd go 22RE over 22R. But I'd dress it up a little more than stock. But confused are you putting a deisel in or gas? Are you going to wheel it? if so I'd go manual over auto and look at dual t-cases. Ditch the push pull steering for cross over. Lockers, selectibles if finances allow. Armor it. Doin' frame up? Sounds nice post up some pics

the 85 is going to be a mostly stock rebuild but the 83 is going to be the 4wheeler. lockers would be very nice - some day. the wiring i pulled out of the truck with 22re in it is for the auto so thats kinda what im wonderin. better to have a 4 speed 22r or auto 22re? sorry not very clear up top.
ive never had an opportunity to offroad with a 22r - cant wait either way.

Search around as I've seen conversions to manual from auto. I know its listed on pirate's faqs (google pirate 4x4 forumn/bulletin board scroll throuth to toyota) the manual transmission from the '83 will mate to the '85 not ideal as the W series is stronger the the G series but it you don't hammer it it'll get you by for a while. You'll have to get creative with the crossmember and a manual 22re computer. Oh and the instrument panel too may take some right brain function.

My buddy rolls and first gen truck with the 22r and he was considering swapping to RE. He's running a weber carb. but it does the job.

I see this thread is 3 months old but you might like to know this. I installed a 20R in my '92 ex-cab, 4WD truck. Mostly cause the motor was there for a good price and my 22RE was blown-up. I made my own simple harness for the instrument cluster, starter, ignition, etc. Even put a pin from a scrap dash connector in mine to have the low fuel light work. A good schematic and 2-4 hours and you're done! And you have a valuable/uncut original harness somebody will need/want.
You can get the pins from connectors of the same Gen and heat shrink the tips to prevent shorting to a neighboring pin.
The BEST part of all this is you don't need a COMPUTER at all!

The reason I wanted carb over EFI? Reliability! I have 100 acres with a prairee going thru the middle. I need to tend to the fence lines this winter, when the venomous snakes are sleeping. With EFI, if the pump. relays or air flow meter on the 17 year old system fail, I may have to walk a mile or more to the barn! Carb rules here.
Everything works on my 216K miles truck and it can really work! I'm semi-retired from my own shop after almost 40 years, so if you need any guidance, just let me know. I can scan and send wiring diags too.
