Carburetor trouble shooting guide anyone?

I fixed my timing issue, somehow got off one tooth while I was replacing the chain. Anyway she still shoots about a foot and a half of fire out of the exhaust at idle. I guess you could say it's running on the rich side. Also the fuel mileage is horrible, something seems to be allowing it to just dump fuel in. Sounds like a tractor at idle, but seems to run smoothly above that. Any ideas or ideas on how to track down the issue?

double check your valve adjustments. .008" intake / .012" exhaust, engine warmed up. .007" intake / .011" exhaust, engine cold.
also check the air-injection system / diverter valve.

Sounds like a maladjusted float. If the fuel bowl overflows, excess amounts of gasoline will literally drip into the intake. The reason it runs better at a higher RPM is because the motor is utilizing more gasoline and, thus, the fuel bowl never find the opportunity to fill up, over flow, and flood the motor.

my truck used to shoot a 4ft flame out of the tail pipe when i let off the gas...or let the engine do some breaking..

it would sounds like a shotgun...it was backfiring..and throwin a BIG flame..LOL

sometimes it would be as long as 6ft..lol..kinda scared some people..but other people thought it was BADA$$

Yeah it is definitely bad@$$, but 8mpg with a 4cyl and the terrible fumes associated with it are not. I did a little research and it sounds like maybe the diaphram in the accelerator pump is torn? About the float bowl, do I just need to take it apart to clean it?

By the way, from what I can remeber, it all went bad after doing some deep water mud running at mudfest in Okeechobee. After that it seemed to run pretty ty and also use too much fuel, but I didn't really run it that long because shortly thereafter it broke the timing chain guide and sat all summer. Anything associated with the mudding be causing this issue?
