Carb question
 

I recently purchased an 85 2wd truck with a 22r. The previous owner ran it low on gas and says it never ran right after. I got it home and found out that plug wires were crossed, newer looking mechanical fuel pump is not pumping good at all, fuel lines were all backwards and it has an older looking reman factory carb. I used a small fuel tank and did a gravity flow test on the carb and it floods terribly at idle. I have rebuilt a carb on an 87 that I owned before, with great results. My question is, what year carbs will be a direct fit on the 85? I'm looking for one that I can rebuild and possibly take two to make at least one working one.

I would say that anything from 1981 to 1990 would work. I base this on researching the carb rebuild kits for those years and they are all the same rebuild kits with the same part numbers, so it would be logical to assume that all those years would fit.
Sounds like you have a stuck float or something is holding open the needle valve. Either of those issues would cause the carb to flood like that. The mechanical fuel pump not pumping well could be an obstructed fuel filter or an obstructed filter sock on the pickup tube in the tank.
You might want to consider using the small fuel tank to feed the existing pump and see what kind of flow you get through it. That way you could rule the pump in or out as an additional issue. It might also tell you if you have a fuel line issue (obstruction) before the pump.

Thank you for the info. The pump will not pump with the small tank either. It looks to be a cheap internet purchase.

That very well could be as parts quality has been a problem for the past several or more years. Depends on source but if you can find one from either Carter or Delphi they tend to be OK.
