Cab swap?
How hard is it to swap a 85 +/- extracab, onto a regularcab 84 chassis, not including the bed chop? Also what are the chances of finding one for sale or at a salvage yard!!!!
Too hard for you if you're asking. And nobody knows the chances of finding one in a salvage yard. Zero if you live in my area.
It would probably bolt up, except for the 2 extra body mounts in the rear of the cab. Im in the process of swapping an 85 extra cab on my 82 longbed frame, and it looks like I am going to have to cut and weld new body mounts all the way around.
I saw the bed mount issue when I contemplated it years ago. I assumed the rest of the mounts would be the same cab to cab. have to cut off,and fab. Finding one might be easyer here in N.C., not alot of rust here, but I guess these cabs have become very popular lately most anywhere.
The rear most body mounts will have to be moved back and the cab will have to be clearanced so it doesn't hit the "horse collar" crossmember.
Or you can add a body lift to make the cab clear the crossmember. |
Gonna have to either notch the body for the tank, or relocate the tank.
Might check clearances on the frame where the rails go up and over the leafs. |
good luck finding a cab here, every junk yard ive been to theres only one or two and most of the time they are severely damaged
I was afraid of that ( most of the replies ). I hate body lifts, and my cab is falling apart from being rolled on it's side years ago and rusting at racked, cracked seams. Floorboards are getting wet w heavy rains. I've seen a nice looking stock 84extcab 4x4 in Garner, but I doubt the owner would sell it. Would a 2wd cab work? just change the fenders?
Yeah a 2wd cab is pretty much the same. Just have to cut different holes for the shifters.
2wd cab is the same, just different fenders.
Minor fab work with the body mounts, though, iirc. |
body mounts are the same between 2wd and 4wd.
Good stuff then
