bypassing the air box
i see people running after market intakes but how do you get around the air box? i mean it wont run without it on so how do you bypass that?
Most usually buy or make an adapter for the Air Flow Meter to attach it to whatever air filter they are using.
ok so its not bypassed, just re routed then
Well there is the air filter box that holds the stock air filter and then there is the AFM that sits on top of the air filter box. So you are eliminating the air filter box and stock air filter and replacing that with a different air filter, typically some sort of open element design and then attaching that to the AFM which in turn connects to the intake tube that runs to the throttle body on the intake.
hmm ok makes a little more sense then. i thought they got rid of the afm all together
so if i were to go out and get a new air filter and ditch my air box designe how can i fit the flow meter to it? does the whole top piece come apart so i can just use the gate thing? or do i have to use the whole top piece?

You can cat a full kit or something like below:

oh sweet, thats pretty much exactly what i was lookin for. always a help 4crawler!
Why do you want to do this? I don't think anyone with a stock engine has documented any "improvement" by making this mod. Or?
well i wouldnt do it to my stocker. besides it looks better than just havin a box. i am probably going to get a new motor though so i am lookin to do a new intake and exhaust kit. i was just curious more than anything.
